for people who want to be creative as opposed to reinventing the wheel every time it can only be a good thing.
Or in the case of my group we have an entire art department which isn't being utilized as our pilgrimmage demo is being produced. Therefore it's a way for us to start getting prepared for asm04 while our coding resources are deverted. I also think that from a visual standpoint the artists should be in as much control as possible.

plek: "i don't trust it performance-wise" is a bit like arguing that Windows steals too much CPU power compared to DOS
MRI: why? i can't really see the connection at all...
plek: well, I have seen the demopaja player code that schedules one effect after the other, and that code is so simple that it doesn't degrade performance. Only the effects that actually does something will "degrade" performance.
It's a bit like arguing that all the multitasking etc. in Windows will significantly degrade performance of a demo, compared to the same demo run in DOS, which don't have any fancy multitasking.
OK, so there was a timer bug in demopaja (that originated from FMOD) that made the effects not run smoothly, but that has been fixed. If only Memon would have time to check things and make a new public release...

how come disabling a single non-fillrate intensive effect (grain-layer) in 85 Dollars speeded up the demo from 2 fps to 30? :)

You know what? The demoscene is constantly living in the past and we're constantly accused of it. Why can't we expect more of our viewer's hardware?
Gargaj: an effect in that layer is not accelerated on your machine maybe?
it was a fullscreen alphablended poly with noise texture jittering around on the screen, what can be non-accelerated on that?
Gargaj: you are funny :-) Do you think that someone releases a demo, and actually wins some compo, if the demo wasn't accelerated and running at 2 fps on their own and the compo macine?
Do I actually have to download that prod now and check what's actually going on? :-) Out of the blue I'm guessing that the blending mode they use is not supported on your HW.
