Asshole virus
category: general [glöplog]
Shit like this (and the constant updating of everything, and being super-paranoid and scanning for rootkits etc. because I use online banking and other stuff) is a reason I left windows too.
Now I run OSX, with windows via bootcamp and vmware. Windows networking is disabled, so it's safe enough (I do nothing important in it now anyway). Only hassle is that I have to download stuff in osx, and copy the file over (simple drag and drop).
What's really troubling with this stuff is that the ones like optimus has aren't that bad - at least you know easily that it's infected and if you know what you're doing you'll clean it instead of handing over your credit card :) The 'bad' ones will hide in the background fucking with your dns, keyloggind, playing man-in-the-middle etc. without you knowing at all. Which is why you really do have to be super paranoid if you're doing anything at all important on it.

i´d like to leave windows aswell...a virus/trojan isn´t that bad against being hacked all of the time....getting rid of the hacker and 12mins to 12hours later he´s back all of the time...
i´m trying to get a normal life after being homeless and such shit...trying to get a coder again, maybe earning some few cents with it in some future...
..."some future" should get exchanged into "the next 5 months" as the german "Arbeitsamt" ( employment center ) set an ultimatum upon me_getting_a_job_as_a_coder !
so,how do you think it is,if you get hacked all the time while trying to fulfill your own expectations and additionally an ultimatum ?!! (i´m not getting any step further atm,as i´m fighting against all the bugs/shit he´s putting into my system again and again! )
dear hacker...if i wont be successfull ,i´ll have a new mission! ;)
( just don´t think he´ll read it here... )
dont tell me bout any virus-protection or firewalls now...just leave this post as is and dont answer to it at all ;) tnx :)
( frustration-level above 100% already :/ )

install Avast
i'm running linux since 2001 or so. never got a single virus.
Yep, but windows is the system that I work on and watch demos and stuff. You can't change that.
Aren't there any virii in linux too? Or people don't bother much about this OS?

Optimuz: can't be compaired between win and linux.

With avast i have removed that kind of viruses. Just first i done normal scan in windows then avast suggest to scan again in begin in the boot up when windows isnt started yet(or atleast not fully started) and from there avast have deleted viruses just fine.
When I was sharing a house with south africans 5 years ago, those guys always tried to make me clean their computers because they catched a virus again. No surprised that they only used the computer for pr0n stuff.
Not saying that you only use the computer for pr0n stuff tho.
Anyway, Optimus, if you run a OS that has the highest penetration (no pun intended), expect to have a lot of people trying to fuck it up. If you don't want to worry about viruses, move to another OS that the secretaries don't use.

the sad news about about moving to another OS is that it doesn't prevent technically disabled people to send you supposedly funny jokes wrapped inside a power point document :(
we regularly get macs 'infected' with viruses here at work, and every time it turns out to be an infected office file.
Optimus: do what I do (but with linux if you're not going for osx): run linux (you can get some pretty locked-down versions), and then run windows in vmware or whatever with networking disabled. It needs a bit more memory, and you'll still need to reboot into windows for full DX support, but it's perfectly usable for most stuff. You don't even need a virus checker + firewall at all really, unless you're putting a lot of dodgy stuff off the net onto it.

Yep but I don't want to have windows emulated. I don't want a slowed down version of windows. I want to use the full force of windows (now that might sound like an oxymoron :P)
It's not much different for a lot of stuff, and actually faster for some things ;) 3d acceleration is the only major loss I'd say.. and perhaps loss of RAM (you'd want to upgrade that really).

dir /ah would be enough to see the hidden files like this, wouldn't it? Nothing is there..
viruses can change what you see, you know.. .especially rootkits.
what you do try:
1. love your enemies (get Rootkit revealer)
2. ask friend for help ( remove autoruns and replace rootkit files - needs secondary machine or prepared VM/PE without disabled autorun)
3. live in peace
enjoy!

I'm with psonice on this one. Linux(Ubuntu) or OSX if you can afford it (cash/time(hackintosh)) + XP on VMware. WINE runs most demos lately, including 4ks and 1ks! if there's something that doesn't work, I fallback to video.
if the VMware image gets infected, there's this magic button called "Revert" and it magically sends the viruses to a black hole called /dev/null.

talking about virtual machines: why not set up a windows-vm and install the suspected piece of software that brought you the virus in there? then you could finally find your inner peace or something..
optimuz, if you absolutely insist to have bareback sex when others suggest to use a condom..
Some day the answer will be ReactOS(but not yet :/).
What LiraNuna said (he's my hero)
About the Linux malware article...
They have a point but one must remember that these guys make a very good living out of peoples' computer security fears.
Quote:
"In people's minds, if it's non-Windows, it's secure, and that's not the case. They think nobody writes malware for Linux or [Mac] OS X. But that's not necessarily true ..."
Quote:
"The growth in Linux malware is simply due to its increasing popularity, particularly as a desktop operating system ... The use of an operating system is directly correlated to the interest by the malware writers to develop malware for that OS."

and thats why we should convince all those stupid people who shouldnt have a computer in the first place to get a mac, so malware authors can concentrate on this os. :)
but then it would be "there is no point in writing demos for Windows because 'nobody' uses that" :)
damnit! (just for the record, i use windows and i'm fine.)

Which is true to the bone. Just stop and think for a while what would happen if windows all of a sudden becamse secure enough, so that av/aspam/firewalls wouldn't be needed. Lot of jobless leeches suddenly spawn. Companies which try to seel av software for linux/OS X get constatly lauged at and the ignored, and for a reason.
"Well if he ALWAYS has fishy breath then it's not his glands.
My dog gets that fishy smell after he licks his rear and his butt gets soaking wet from him licking it for so long and that fishy smell is on his butt too and on the coach where he was sitting while licking away. In this case it's his glands. It is a fishy smell, so you are right.
But if he always smells like that he's either always licking his butt or it's something else."
