finnish

I wanna learn to speak finnish so I can ramble on in it after drinking a bottle of absolut. It appeals to me more than screaming angry sounding russian after drinking a bottle of smirnoff - that and I reckon I'd be the only Australian citizen who'd speak it. =]
So do any of you fine finns lurking here have any recommendations on how to do this? Matter o' fact, does anyone here who's learnt another language have any suggestions?
Suggestions involving the consumption of alcohol are encouraged. =]

consumption of large quantities of alcohol is always good to your language skills.
first get some learning material -books are not recommended, because the more you drink the harder to read -movies, tapes, cd's are excellent, or a native speaker (preferably from the opposite sex ;-)) is the best
2. get lotsa alcohol. (even more.)
3. start listening to the material, or flirting with the native speaker.
4. drink.
5. try to repeat what you've just heard, or if you feel you are ready try to say new sentences.
6. while language skills != perfect goto 4.
Well, you won't learn a word, but you'll be great at rambling finnish like nonsense...

Italian loverboy sits in a cafe in Rome. Suddenly he sees a gorgeous blonde staring at a church. He approaches and they start talking in English, although neither knows how to speak it perfectly. They have a nice time together so they find themselves in bed later on. After having a hot and lengthy sex session, the Italian guy says "You finish?". The blonde looks rather dazzled and replies "No.". So the Italian starts a even more passionate love session (to prove his manhood). After that, the Italian lights a cigaret and asks: "You finish?". The blonde even more dazzled and even embarassed replies "No!". So the Italian, with the remaining strength his body had, starts yet another sex round. After that, being completely exhausted, the Italian asks again: "You finish?". The blonde smiles and replies:
"No, no, me no Finish... Me Swedish!"
I don't know, seemed relevant... :-P

absolut is from sweden so you should drink koskenkorva and then you can talkt finnish ;)
test: can you distinguish the important buying criteria from meaningless details? pick two out of three.
-how much it costs
-how drunk it'll make you
-the brand and where it is from

Well, Absolut's dead wrong
Koskenkorva? Nice, but somewhat obscure.
How about Finlandia? Isn't it obvious? :)

Finlandia is too obvious and too expensive. Go for 'pohjan poika', 'jaloviina', 'savon viina' or 'suomi viina'.. The only problem is, you most likely have to come to Finland to get these:D
...and going to Finland is one of the best methods to learn Finnish :-)
Too expensive? I guess it depends where you live.. with alcohol taxes here, you could say everything's too expensive.. with most things being expensive to the same extent :)
FooLman: That was the general idea:D
Bigcheese: I was of course thinking about the alcohol prices in Finland. A 1 liter bottle of Finlandia Vodka costs something like 33 euros (i guess) whereas 2 half liter bottles of say 'suomi viina' or any other not-so-famous wodka cost probably something like 20-25 euros total . (disclaimer: Its been a while since i last bought any wodka's in Finland so i've pretty much forgotten the actual prices)
Since in Finland there is only one (state owned) company allowed to sell alcoholic bewerages that have more that 5% or so of alcohol the prices tend to be quite high. Also it seems its illegal for them to tell anything about alcoholic bewerages which have more than 22% of alcohol in them on the web or anywhere else (it would be considered as advertising). Or atleast thats what they say on their website. weird:)
And we also have insane alcohol taxes: A bottle (0.33 liters) of beer costs slightly over 1 euro (about 1 USD i guess) in the shops!

Well, I take it I'm wrong about Absolut being Finnish, all I can remember from the other weekend was when we were in the bottle'o buying booze and I was tempted to fork out the extra $10 for a bottle of Absolut, I was tempted because I was sure the label read "Fine Finlandia Vodka", (is Finlandia different from Finland?) So I must be remembering a different type of vodka or I've forgotten the few sober hours of that weekend (the bottle'o and waking up on the porch sitting in a chair in my sleeping bag with kookaburras mocking me.)
So maybe it was a different type of vodka I saw that on since I just checked the Absolut website and it says Sweden. Either way, I still wanna learn Finnish. I saw on the finland aussie embassy site they have a 3 week trip thingo to Finland for an intensive education/brainwashing on Finnish history, culture and language - I'll probably do it next year when I've finnished =] uni coz the time of the trip clashes with exams.
What are you crying about a stubbie costing that much for? That's a cheap price for a single stubbie when translated to $AU, I presume you can buy cartons? But hang on, you say a bottle is 330ml? Hehe, ours are 375ml. Mmm... beer....
Well, better start drinkin' and learnin' to speak finnish. BTW, i laughed at the joke, but knew what was coming because of the context of the discussion, it still made me smile though =]

Shplorb: There's a lot to cry about the price when you consider that with the price of one small bottle of beer in Finland you could buy about 2 liters of beer in Germany=D
And the Slogan of Finlandia is 'Vodka of Finland' (iirc) so you must've been drunk:)

"pohjan poika"? that sounds cool.. ("poika" in russian means "boozing" 8))
I am the living proof that visiting Finland ain't the best way to learn finnish (the useless parts of it. of course I can ask for booze and cheap food).
Learn Italian or Russian, they are fundamental when it comes to bargain with mafia hitmen.

A list of finnish sentances, that come in handy:

Suksi vittuun
Vvedä vittu päähän
Ime munaa, runkkari
Äitisi nai poroja!
pimppi
saatana
perkele
molopää
haista vittu
vedä käteen
huora

I'd rather have on finnish beer that costs alot than 2 big german beers.. not that I've had too many german beers so perhaps some generous german scener can send me some good once ;)
btw jaloviina sux.. and if you're after cheap booze you should visit either estland or stop at the resting places outside helsinki and make a deal with the russians ;)

Are there other useful finnish sentences than those for alcohol or cheap food? =)
But Absolut certainly does *not* say anything about finland, or finlandia (same thing) on it, so you must've been drunk.
Pohjan poika means something like northern boy, and while i do admit its cheap (for finnish booze), its also undrinkable. Try koskenkorva.
The russian illegal booze can be questionable in quality to say the least. Almost as dangerous as uttering any of those aforementioned words to anyone =).
Jar: sa et tunnistaisi suomenkielta vaikka se purisi sua perseeseen ;)

I wonder, how much this "illegal russian booze" costs in finland?..
over here it's about 3 bucks for a half-liter of vodka and it'll be absolutely drinkable. for us$ 8-10 you'll get the top notch stuff that'll be smooth as baby's arse. 8)
