Got Avast complaining about the flash code on the official site, telling it was a known exploit...

Just so you know :)

More electronic paper:

http://www.plasticlogic.com/ (start video)

Unfortunately it is much too slow for demos.

I have a Sony Reader, but the refresh rate is too low sadly.

so... code some procedural gfx *fg*

omg this is big news for me... i didn't follow this topic,
so sue me if there are other magazines that use this
already.... if there's one... soon there'll be two...

i'm working in a err... don't know what you
would call it ... in Austria it's called a Trafik (dict.leo.org
says it's called a tobacconist).

I can see the day coming when all those magazines
start blinking at me, showing me game-scenes,
women cooking stuff, running dogs, showing scenes
of TV-series for kids, etc etc ... ALL AT ONCE *argh*

... and don't forget the animated porn magazines... -.-

omg .... this is some shit, i hate it...

Isn't the low refreshrate a bit of the point of the whole product? To reduce flickering and make it more comfortable for the eye to read long sections of text?

The eInk display is actually bistable. After updating it retains its information indefinitely without requiring further refresh. There is no flicker or view angle dependence - it does really look like paper, albeit with slightly lower contrast. A refresh is only required if you want to change the displayed information. Both the display mechanism and the used backplanes are quite slow so that a display update takes up to several hundred milliseconds. This is no issue for an application like an ebook, but simply out of question if you want to display animations.

I am still waiting for the ultimate, unified, display technology. Too bad there are so many compromises to be taken.

El Topo: Calexico gave an excellent answer. Also, the refresh being a physical process, it's not expected to improve them dramatically in the near future.
Also to avoid a problem called "ghosting" it's better to clear the screen to black (physically) before drawing the new image... not really practical for demos - until you find a design idea including ghosting itself as a feature, of course ;)
