Hi, this is mostly directed to the hornet dudes (mr voss I think?) .. I found a music disk from 95 called Drastic Scream by Soundwave recently on ftp.scene.org and wanted to relive some of the killer tunes on here, unfortunately I can't get it to run properly on DOS-box... I'm pretty sure it's packed with PKLITE but I wanted to know if it was possible to extract the tunes from the .exe so I can actually listen to them! Any help here? Someone on scene.org pointed me in this direction... cheers for any assistance :D

Thanks, I actually managed to get this running under dosbox finally, running an emulated soundblaster (original) with a low bitrate... the first track played and the others were tantalisingly out of reach due to a lack of mouse support for some reason (no keyboard either) ... someone told me to try using a hex editor on the unpacked file but I still couldn't find any headers or anything...

Dunno how I can be so obsessed with this but there ya go! :D

havent bothered actually trying it myself but these links should be enough to get the job done :S

and i guess modplug or xmplay should be able to handle .dmf replay.. if not, you can also try deliplayer or whatever its called..

actually, i'm not leaving, as ps knows now, but would be nice.. :)

it's a cinch to rip the mods. i used unp to unpack the exe and ripper 5 to extract the songs. the tricky part is, the tunes are in .amf format, which is an old obscure format used only by the dmp player. i managed to track down an xmplay/winamp plugin which plays amf files here. and it works. so.. try that.

i guess ripper 5 deserves to be in the db as a demotool no? o_O

Hmm... unpacked it using unp, tried ripper5 but only found 3 .voc files and 2 picture files (.rix) ... argh! tried the hex-editor too but couldn't find any strings by the name of AMF ... frustrating!

for general ripping purpose i've always liked Extractor from nova software, which has recently turnt free :)

well phoenix - if you do decide to hop on a plane, be sure to come to Syntax Party :=] (I believe djkrpt is flying over from NZ for it!)

Just checking out Drastic Scream now...

Not that it seems to matter much now but:

a) You can get the mouse working with this disk under DOSBox if you first use it in another app (for example Fasttracker II) trapping the cursor. Then exit said app and run ds.exe
b) MilkyTracker can import .AMF modules in case you want to take a peek or edit them.

Thanks for you help guys, I finally managed to extract these tunes, it's amazing how much trouble you can take all for a trip down memory lane (but these are some cool tracks anyway)... just had to brush up on my DOS skills which were a little rusty since 96 when I first heard this disk!

While doing my googling I came across a guy named Sol who used one of these tunes in a programming demonstration he was doing and said he couldn't find Lasse Makkonen (aka Soundwave) to credit him for the track... anyone know what happened to this guy? He's probably an orthodontist or something these days...
