Blueberry: Provided there's any justification for thinking Chrome makes naughty collect calls to the Google invasion fleet (apart from the usual Google-steals-my-thoughts paranoia), I think nothing of the sort will happen. People would stick to Safari, Opera, Firefox or *shiver* IE instead of waiting for a "clean" Chrome.

So, the EULA is fixed now! And this was a quick move from Google aswell. I mean heck, the guys seem to be caring for real. Now, just add all those beautiful but yet missing features and Google will conquer the world.

People will add it as soon as support for 3rd party addons will be enabled. And also my I/O read counters for all chrome processes are perfectly normal.

I understand it's indexing every page you visit (to enable searching your browsing history), so you'd expect a lot more disk access than other browsers (except perhaps safari on osx, which does the same thing).

that said, if indexing can be disabled i'm quite sure the IO will drop down. in fact if you're this skeptical, the source is there. just compile and see what causes it.

psonice: Opera 9.5 also indexes ( locally of course ) the content of the pages you visit. It makes the address bar more awesome than Firefox's awesome in that that you don't even have to remember the correct wording of parts of the title or url of a page to get it back, just one or two words of the actual page and voila.

Having a Google Suggest thingy in the address bar is also cool. Just hope they don't send the UID of the browser in the request.

It has nothing to do with indexing. Like I wrote already two times in this thread, it reads like a maniac without ever using the browser. Just leave it idle for an hour and you will see it has reached the 1.000.000 IO read mark.

Maybe it depends on the OS, dunno. Tested it on XP.

Well it is. At least, supposedly the latest Firefox builds have a JIT javascript engine that outperforms Chrome (and keep in mind that Chrome is also beta ATM).

I could do that but I was too lazy. Instead I decided to stick with FF 3 for now :)

regarding I/O processes: chromes structure is so that side processes are responsible for instantiating plugins and rendering views. they receive input from the user and send output back to the primary process rendering the stuff on screen.

because a subprocess may also embed a flash site playing e.g. a video, the frequency with which data is sent has to be rather high.

think of it as a kind of VNC-like system.

Doom: last figures I heard for the JS VM in FF3 is that it performs at half the speed of V8.

This is where Chrome will probably shine (ha ha, pun) -not in stealing market value from other browsers, but getting people over at the other browser camps to sit up and take notice of their own product's performance. Javascript performance is the new sprite record :)
