Yes, but how can they do that if people start routinely removing the information collecting components from the browser?

but chrome *is* safari, just with google branding.
No. That's like saying Omniweb is Firefox with ...Omnigroup branding. They both use the same render engine.
Blueberry: Provided there's any justification for thinking Chrome makes naughty collect calls to the Google invasion fleet (apart from the usual Google-steals-my-thoughts paranoia), I think nothing of the sort will happen. People would stick to Safari, Opera, Firefox or *shiver* IE instead of waiting for a "clean" Chrome.
i for one welcome our new overlords.
So, the EULA is fixed now! And this was a quick move from Google aswell. I mean heck, the guys seem to be caring for real. Now, just add all those beautiful but yet missing features and Google will conquer the world.
they will never add support for adblock or sth. similar... -> fail.
i'm going back to firefox. it's not that fast (yet), but i'm rid of those flash/flash-layer/popup/popunder etc fucking ads.
and the constant hdd access makes me mad.

I understand it's indexing every page you visit (to enable searching your browsing history), so you'd expect a lot more disk access than other browsers (except perhaps safari on osx, which does the same thing).
that said, if indexing can be disabled i'm quite sure the IO will drop down. in fact if you're this skeptical, the source is there. just compile and see what causes it.
psonice: Opera 9.5 also indexes ( locally of course ) the content of the pages you visit. It makes the address bar more awesome than Firefox's awesome in that that you don't even have to remember the correct wording of parts of the title or url of a page to get it back, just one or two words of the actual page and voila.
Having a Google Suggest thingy in the address bar is also cool. Just hope they don't send the UID of the browser in the request.

It has nothing to do with indexing. Like I wrote already two times in this thread, it reads like a maniac without ever using the browser. Just leave it idle for an hour and you will see it has reached the 1.000.000 IO read mark.
Maybe it depends on the OS, dunno. Tested it on XP.

Well it is. At least, supposedly the latest Firefox builds have a JIT javascript engine that outperforms Chrome (and keep in mind that Chrome is also beta ATM).
Rob: Run filemon to find out what it's doing?
I could do that but I was too lazy. Instead I decided to stick with FF 3 for now :)
regarding I/O processes: chromes structure is so that side processes are responsible for instantiating plugins and rendering views. they receive input from the user and send output back to the primary process rendering the stuff on screen.
because a subprocess may also embed a flash site playing e.g. a video, the frequency with which data is sent has to be rather high.
think of it as a kind of VNC-like system.

Doom: last figures I heard for the JS VM in FF3 is that it performs at half the speed of V8.
kusma: Guess it depends where you look. E.g.
Kusma: Doom is probably referring to the latest nightly builds of FF3.1a which have been further tweaked upon after the release of Chrome.
Look at them pretty bars here!
This is where Chrome will probably shine (ha ha, pun) -not in stealing market value from other browsers, but getting people over at the other browser camps to sit up and take notice of their own product's performance. Javascript performance is the new sprite record :)

Oh, and I'm still waiting for your comic, Doom.

hallelujah. privacy can stop at the bathroom door damnit.
paniq, I find it hilarious how I tried to talk to you about that for 30 minutes and you STILL don't get it ;)
Shifter: You'll get your comic as soon as you tell me what it's about. I still don't know in what way you disagree with me, so for now I have to assume you're simply trolling because you're an antisocial sort of person. As much as that breaks my heart, trolls don't get comics.
Doom: Haha, cool! The heat is on!

You seemed to pretty sure about what you had to tell me and asked if I needed a comic to spell your point out. Now you don't know anymore? That is NOT how this whole "I have an argument, want to know what it is?!" business works. Stop waiting for me to tell you what to draw and send in the comic panels already!
On topic: I wish the blue tabs would be customizable at least in colour. Not everybody has Vista or a themed XP pretending to be Vista. If they pull that shit on OS X, heads will roll.
really fast but anim. *.gif for example here move in slomo on my machine.
