creating percussion sounds and sequences for demos

category: general [glöplog]
to demo musicians: what's your favorite method of generating beats/rhythms for a demo soundtrack?

i am using logic pro 8 and ableton live these days. i tend to sequence percussion directly with recorded midi parts that trigger a drum machine (either software like ultrabeat, or hardware). i know that others like to come up with loops, and split them up into chunks that can be rearranged.

also, where do you get your percussion sounds? i recently started a house-style track and i'm getting a bit frustrated at finding a good snare drum sound that will fit. i'm starting to think that a dance music percussion sample cd would be worthwhile.

I use NI Battery for sample based stuff, but you can synthesize/sequence some nice sounds in NI Massive as well.

I use Reason 4 which has quite a bit of nice drum sounds....and also I listen to the melodies I come up with and drum beats sorta arrange themselves in my head so I track them down point-and-click.

Unless of course I come up with drums first, then it's the same process but backwards.

I thought electronica was the vaguely IDMish ballads that people put out.

Here in france people have hijacked the very fine word electro using it not to mean the mighty electro funk but just about anything, including (and actually most of the times meaning) the type of rock that people do with electronic music equipment when they would love to play guitar but are too fucking wasted on drugs to learn. Punk for rich people.

In the USA, anything that's slighty electronic sounding and not a hip (h|p)op beat = techno. :)

electronica is stuff like boards of canada, aphex twin, chemical brothers, daft punk, madonna ray of light etc.
techno was invented in the usa, michigan, detroit. it was cooked up by 3 young guys which were influenced music heritage of their own hometown and some weird stuff which was played on the electrifying mojo radioshow and new type of disco music of gay parties at the chicago. techno is gritty dystopian genre of music with the soul. like when you hear techno you think "cold city". yep. that's what i call techno. well i'm off. kthnxbai
