category: general [glöplog]

Its a phone that runs Linux pretty much. It has a 400mhz arm9, and a separate gfx accelerator chip. It seems like it would be a good candidate for demo's.

I bought one, and I plan to port some of my effects over to it. It should be pretty fun.

Isn't that the "phone" that needs 4 minutes for booting and command line interaction even just for changing date and time?

On the other hand it has got the GCC toolchain so could be fun!

Yeah, you're right on the money. Except, it only takes 2 minutes to boot. I'm a big fan of OpenSource, so its worth the wait. Plus I doubt I'd be turning it off and needing to restart it all that often.

I'm just excited that it will be so easy to develop for! Also, it has 3d acceleration, which is very neat.

3D acceleration sounds indeed interesting. But mind you that most of the smartphones of today have that as well. As for easy programmability I really like the N95 and such. Once you are beyond the initial signing process hurdle it is really nice to develop for, esp. when using Python (which abstracts most of the Symbian horror away).

3D chip is a SMedia 3362. OpenGL ES 1.1 and ~1.28 MPolys/s.

1.28 MPolys/s. eh? I wonder how that compares against other smartphones.

Theoretical and probably not really comparable performance... They also probably mean only filled or flatshaded or something... ;)
And its 40k polys @ 30fps, which is not thaaat much...

If I were to make a demo on this thing, I wonder if we could get OpenMoko section added to the platform list on Pouet!

question 1: is the device unique enough? it seems to use off the shelf components, so clones are not necessarily purely imaginative. if it really is unique...

- make 1 single demo for it, chances are it will end up in the wild category

- or manage to convince more ppl to make demos for the thing, or make several demos on your own, so a separate category would be clearly justified

havoc: i think the point of that phone is that it's as open source as possible, so it'll attract the linux fans. Whether it's a unique platform or not doesn't really matter so much perhaps. Then again, if it's just linux running on a fairly standard phone (i've not seen the specs so don't quote me on that), I guess linux stuff that has fairly basic 3d hardware requirements should be pretty easy to port?

I still think iphone looks best for mobile demos though - lots of them around, standard hardware, nice big screen, good 3d + sound hardware, and a decent ide with a full simulator. Gcc is available to run on it directly if you jailbreak, and the app store looks good for distributing stuff (not sure how that'd fit in with compos and releasing the binaries, mind).

For potential customers probably not, but for creation of a separate category on this site it's crucial ;)

jesus ...
Starting a OpenMoko platform on Pouet was a bit of a joke. I think a demo for the OpenMoko would fall under the Linux category.

I'm guessing it runs opengl es, and would need at least some porting? If not, then yeah, the linux category fits. If it does, then I guess it deserves it's own category (or more likely 'linux/mobile' or similar), once it has enough demos to justify it.
