PSP - homebrew antifriendly

category: general [glöplog]
does anyone know what kind of sales they expect / need to break even?

Knos: of course and I don't judge. I just find this a pretty useless project. I understand people wanting to make even cooler devices, but how many of these things do we need? This market is so flooded that you can pretty much guarantee this thing will 'flop'.

(note: I'm a huge portable gaming console fan and pretty much own all handheld gaming consoles from 1987 to 2002)

hmm, did some reading, apparently gamepark only survived for as long as it did due to massive government funding.. and it's now rumoured to be out of business

GamePark or GamePark Holdings? The original company split in two and 2X is a product of the latter. The original GP had big plans but they didn't manage to produce anything.

It will sell the first 2000 or 3000 units in a flash, and then it will die.

Okkie: got a Game King?

http://bripro.com/low/gameking/index.php

(Yes, that's for the page with the 'how to develop for it as well' bits.)

I do, it's completely underpowered and very, very asian knockoff lowbudget garbage, but the cartridges had such ... amazing Engrish (:

And of course at some point I need to make a demo for it.
Can I code on this someway? Maybe I need to build some custom cartidge??

Mega Duck!? :)

About the GP2X, the Gamepark companies and Korea..

The GP2X was a moderate success. but initial sales were primarily Korean. Korea had banned import of (some?) Japanese consoles for a while, boosted GP2X sales. Here in Europe it did okay in some Linux communities and of course with the retro gamers. Later on the ban was lifted.

The original company that did the GP32 split up.. GP Holdings on one side (supporting open source stuff) and another more commerce oriented company that has gone bust. The latter was making the XGP. After the import restrictions were lifted Nintendo and Sony killed them. They didn't even get to the fabrication stage. The GP2X held out because it was directed at a different market, instead of going head-to-head with the big boys.

The GP2X is a nice machine and very open, great for emulation and demos. It has its flaws, though: the build quality is inferior to the PSP or NDS. And the SoC wasn't as hot, relatively, compared to the GP32 at their respective time of release.

A while ago (2 months?) GPH stopped production of the GP2X. A follow-up is rumoured but this chipset is not exactly state-of-the-art. More like low-end, actually. It is also rumoured to be GP2X compatible (my guess is partially).

Like most handheld devices GP2X and Pandora are simply an off-the-shelf SoC with a shell around it. There are almost no peripheral IC's. Indeed, you can make quite a profit on that.

The Pandora is very real. There are actual working prototypes. http://www.gp2x.de/video/Small.avi. Some emulators have already been ported. It's truly state-of-the-art, with a price tag to match, basically. They shouldn't postpone it too much, though.

truck: no, i've never really been into the cheap knock-off handhelds. (except for the Megaduck ofcourse) Though, if it's cheap I would like to have one :)

Okkie: it was 20 quid, complete with all the cartridges. I haven't seen it available since then tho. Prolly cuz it was so completely sub-par

Damn, I didn't expect them to pull it through. Now I suppose I need to spend another 100e+ on yet another handheld :/

So in the end my PSP has been liberated! Suicide Barbie was run. Cave story was started and I could check that a decent PCE emulator existed.

And a toolchain was downloaded..
