Demo Kiosk project for NVScene
category: general [glöplog]
havoc: pretty acceptable.
yes, maybe its a german attitude i show here..
but: maybe we can see history repeating here (in a good ways ;)
also maybe new ppl wont leave the older computers not untouched.
the weak point is a specific operating system is very strong (and even growing) today..
might be "scene" will become quite only like that. :/ (say commercial)
i´ve watched the "trends" for some years now..
but i also believe in the scene! :)
it´s strong. very strong!
(me very emo now and going to bed)

if they like what they see, they'll stick around in the scene, and maybe they'll get interested enough in scene history to download a bunch of amiga demos... you never know. just let's not force it upon them straight from day one.

well, you know, times, they are a-changing... and so are the habits of the scene. i have absolutely no clue how many 16*16 bob objects a modern gpu can render in a single frame, but i guess it is probably enough to fill a couple of pallets of widescreen lcd monitors. when it comes to such numbers, the record that whole hordes of ppl chased twenty years ago has become nothing but obsolete on modern day platforms. and it is good that way. ;)
i don't believe it is possible to really "buy" the scene. nvidia has proven they are willing and able to setup the biggest and by far most promising pc democompetition of the year. to achieve this, they supplied participants with (their self produced) uptodate hardware and funded more than decent competition prizes. in return for what they're giving, all they asked is some cool entries for their party. i guess that's a pretty fair deal, to say the least.
at the same time, we all know that the majority of participants are pretty damn smart people, who, if they would desire to do so, could make way more money in the same time working at their jobs or in some other capacity than they could ever dream to make with preparing their nvision entries. the truth is, it's still very much a penis measuring contest, just like it was in the old days and like it always will be, but never really properly admitted by all involved participants. for example, niels/tpb, as we have all noticed, has already started claiming his dick shrunk on this very bbs, so that we won't nag him about it too much when it becomes obvious after he takes his pants off in san jose in a couple of weeks from now. others have already started the "fifth colonne" hyping of their prods several months ago by claiming not to have time for other projects due to their work on nvision entries (in reality, they just took an extra long nose-picking break, to prepare for the usual frenzied last-minute smacking together of a glorified flashy object show in their usual pointlessly enjoyable style). they all want to win this thing, no doubt. but they're also still very much doing their own thing, they way they like it. if anyone would try to take away that freedom, all but a tiny fraction of sceners will just frown and continue doing whatever it was they were doing before the message came through.

Alrighty, here's the 'final' look of the kiosk:

Please please please tell me if any listed data on there is wrong or inconsistant.
Sadly I ran out of time and won't beable to get any more demos onto there. So we have a total of 24 demos captured in HD. A few of the captures are sloppy, I hope it's acceptable enough for everyone.
Sorry that all of the demos are from Windows, no other equiptment here and no time to re-encode existing captures. Hopefully next time I'll have a bigger set.
In any case, it was a fun project and I do hope people enjoy it at NVScene. D.TV, get me a few shots of it in use, will ya? ;) I'd love to see the reaction of people with it.

I've found another one. It's missing AMIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
micksam: I'm curious, what did you use to put the UI together? Video-on-buttons is something WPF does really easily, is this like a dvd menu thing or something else?
Saulin Penis GBA!
gb, spammer :)
looks good micksam! the only problem with it for me is that there's only like 5 groups listed :)

Alright! Next year, I'll have 4 times as much to choose from. At the very least, 4 times as much. Maybe more. :)
Gb: Flash.. :) Entire thing is AS3/Flash because it was the simplest to design such with. And flash's h.264 decoder is fairly fast on standalone binary [needed for HD videos]. The animations are all scripted, design was easy to do though.
