oldschool megademo with mainmenu anyone?

category: general [glöplog]
hm, I always wanted to make a last megademo with mainmenu and classic screens on our good old shitty ATARI ST. (Not STE, TT, or Falcon!) ;) With some oldschool stuff we dreamed about in the good old ST times. no rotators, vectors or things like that! just a mainmenu, many colors, overscans, splines, sprites.... somebody knows when the last was made?
anybody of the ol ST coders interested in making one?
things I would code for it will be:
1. some kind of overscan paradroid mainmenu. :D
2. an overscan fake splinescreen (DNA splines I ever wanted to do)
3. a overscan tribute to the "world of commodore bending scroller" :D
4. overscan paralax overflow
5. some kind of a last greetings sceen.

what I really miss for the screens actually is a pure ST chipmusician (without sid and digi voices. i won't time samples in overscan as they sould like shit on ST and only make things uneffectively slow.) and some actual graphics.

Isn't there some kind of FM-chip in ST (YM-XXXX or AY-XXXX chip)?

yes YM2149

seppjo... well Leonard had the same idea about 10 years ago and created NOSTALGIC-O-DEMO :) ... I personally like the idea and would support the project... maybe I can motivate some tscc guys to code a guestscreen too.

I know, also I missd to code a screen for this one. but as it's already 10 years ago it would be time for a new one. MEGADEMO
Would be great if you can motivate your crew. can you send me some musixx from you? would like to include some new ones.

well I think it's possible I smash something together... maybe I even have some old unfinished track that doesnt use sid or other newschool fx :)

cool, but I'm also very interested in the newschool fx for perhaps a soundscreen or so. that would be cool. you have my adress?

seppjo: music is the least of problems, there's loads of chipmusicians in the scene nowadays. you could probably get 3 tunes for every screen if you want... ;)

hmm, but then you end up with a very limited demo.. to be honest i never really dreamed about scrollers, rasterbars and starfields, stuff like karl's first rotator and synergy's 3d screen inspired me way more than those "hardcore oldskool" effects :/

Have to agree with havoc here. A big megademo project is more interesting without any artificial limitations. And it's not like megademos in the past didn't have rotators, 3D or other good stuff. Nobody wants another demo packed with only rasterbars and scrollers ;)

I have to say that this idea sounds nice even though I have nothing to do with the Atari scene.
Ps. a lot of fm enthusiasts

seppjo: is the risky addy in your profile still valid?
added on the 2008-08-19 12:46:50 by ltk_tscc ltk_tscc
ltk: yes, it's valid.

havoc: at least no limitations, everybody can do what he wants. As I never really became a good coder I stay to the olschool effects. ;)

britelite: yes, of course no limitations. I was just brabbeling.

Btw, the ST doesn't use a FM synthesis capable sound chip, it's a square wave synthesizer :]

Seppjo; This one isn't ten years old, not even three.

evil: cool, thank you. you all don't seem to want us to make a new one?

menu style demo colaboration on midschool/newschool platforms anyone?

whoo... i'd be interested in doing a guest screen for this too if it ever gets off the ground. i started work on an ate bit st demo last year but the amount of work required for an entire demo put me off

seppjo, the last two serious attempts at a megademo (nostalgic-o and the 20yrs demo) both succeeded, so i don't see why yours should fail. ofcourse the easiest way to get things going is to spread a cool preview and a lot of rumours so people will get enthusiastic about the project, and want to get involved. :)

a lot depends on timing also, f.e. i have commitments to other projects right now, so it will take a couple of months before i have some free time, probably. i'm reluctant to make promises before i know i can fulfill the ones already made first. ;)

optimus: hmm it sounds cool, but it'd be a rather loose collaboration i guess(?), since you can't really mix different platform screens except by making some emulator frankenstein construction. or am i missing smth ? :)

Hmm,. I didn't wanted to write platform there but another word. But a strange idea from my subconscious.. :PPP

evilpaul:
sounds great. of course I'm interested in this screen(s?). I also have only those 4 or 5 screen (including the menu) goals. Do not want to make more than those, as they will take enough time.

havoc:
as I already said, perhaps the next oxyron party will be a good date to meet and also release it. so we still have some months to go.
And yes I'll have to post some preview screenys to do some motivation here.
my personal motivation depends from gfx and musixx as this is mostly where my screens fail or miss something. ;) also I mostly trend to some kind of party and hack coding. don't like to use already published stuff.
"ST people united" :)

Optimuz:
this would be the occasion to do the ST screen you often thought about. ;)

Emulator frankenstein construction a la piggamel, sound awesome Havoc :D

"pure ST chip music without sid / digi voices" = Spectrum chip music (well, if you shift it up half an octave anyway. And ignore those niggly AY / YM differences) so there's no shortage of musicians who could fill that gap. Just saying... :-)

I'd love something like this with a ton of real oldschool effects. But with sid would be better. Just saying... :-)

evilpaul, nice to see you are interested, if you need support, make sure to drop by on irc sometime :)

seppjo, souds like a plan to me! :-) and if oxyron party turns out to be too short a timeframe, we can always decide to wait until the next good party (outline, demozone, the next oxyron party, anything goes imho ;))

buckethead :)

gasman: true, ofcourse :)

psonice: sid emulation (albeit of the crude type) is possible on the ST... :)
added on the 2008-08-20 22:55:55 by havoc havoc
havoc: perhaps it's not sid, or perhaps it was one of the other models (i always had an amiga back in those days, only got an st a few years back and i still know next to nothing about it..) But anyway, that great sid-like sound that tons of old atari chipmusic had.
