Demos at nvision

category: general [glöplog]
From what I gather, this is more than just a scene party and I'm thinking there might be a few commercial/non-scene entries that will really open the playing field and provide some tough competition.

On one hand Nvision could be a great step in the evolution of the scene and we're sure to see some amazing releases, but on the other, a lot of sceners might find they're small fish in a very big pond.

It's gonna be interesting! :)

navis: seeing as we arent under any (demobox-related) pressure to finish and our animator is on holiday, its pretty doubtful we'll be rushing to make it.

demoscene sellout

Wade: I imagine we'll see the same schism happen that's happened in europe, where there are big (gamer related) corporate events and smaller hacking-oriented parties.

Is it known how many groups applied for one of the demoboxes from nvidia?

http://nvision.scene.org/registrations/ , the list of euroweenies looks pretty similar to http://www.nvision2008.com/Enthusiasts/nvscene_speakers.cfm

It will be very interesting to see if the demo-compo can live up to the hype!
I mean with the speculation that the sub-par quality demo-compos of some recent parties (ASM most notably) is a direct effect of groups holding out for nvision, expectations are high.
If the compos indeed turns out to be a big success as people expect, I must say that I am a bit surprised that the organizers managed to pull this off.
A completely new event, far from the geographical "heart" of the scene. What exactly is the draw?
Sure, prices are good, but not as high as ASM for example. The attendance will probably be nowhere near that of the large European parties, so there won't be the massive crowd reactions to your demo on the bigscreen (or do they count on non-scene people attending and watching the compos)?

Well, one shouldn't underestimate the obligation to support the suppliers of free demoboxes - I think this is what (hopefully) makes the compos at NVision totally awesome - nothing less, nothing more :)

And the fact that it's a huge party that allows remote entries.

Puryx: The 2nd largest hacker con and (currently) largest NA demoparty, Notacon/Blockparty:
http://notacon.org/
http://www.demoparty.us/2008/speakers.shtml

Sdw: the draw will be that we will now have -two- parties that we NA'ers don't have to fly over an ocean for. For euros, not as much of a draw. I just hope that NV doesn't back out of doing it next year after this year's attendance is low. I mean if you get 3 dozen sceners to a demoparty in NA right now that's a roaring success, they (and by They I don't mean Temis and Gargaj but the NV corporates) seem to expect that if they pour the money into the party that people will magically fill the space... but us NA'ers are all wary and a huge chunk of the potential audience will be going to PAX instead.
It'll be fuckin' rad if the ILM/Lucasarts or Pixar people come in and throw down. I'm looking forward to that. NVScene should be a highly concentrated party.

every self respecting scene country should have at least two parties claiming to be the biggest and best. slowly but surely, america is catching up. :)

nvidia will probably compete with a new techdemo, win the compo and laugh at the scene (prods).

Nvidia/ATI tech demos don't stand a chance artistically to real demos...
