MSI Wind: much better than the Eee PC
Our overall opinion of the Wind? It’s good work. Though its physical design may not appeal to everyone, the technology under the skin is as good as it gets at this kind of price point. Intel’s new Atom processor performs its job admirably, there’s plenty of storage, it’s slightly user upgradable and the battery life is excellent.

After many straight hours of hacking on my EEE900 on LCP this weekend, I can say that it works just fine with the exception of the keyboard. Especially the fact that the EEE keyboard has the numbers one step out of sync ('1' key is to the far left where '§' key is on a normal keyboard) made me have to retype many letters both two and three times before I got it right.

I plan to get a subnotebook, or at least a 12", some time soon when I have money for it. But there are so many companies enterring the market, for example VIA, that I'm waiting a little more time :)
In theory the Linux interface is supposed to help with the tiny screen since XP was never designed for anything like these. If they haven't done anything to the apps it might not help a lot though. I'm sure the Ubuntu netbook version will be a lot less painful that what they bundle...

i was thinking to buy a subnotebook with lunix or sth, a desktop with fat specs and remote desktop, and then just use rdesktop to tunnel to the desktop from the subnotebook anywhere, with mobile intarweb and stuff like that. but i'm sure one of you is now going to tell me why that's a bad idea.

skrebbel: slow speed over the net, and small screen size? It'll be good for some stuff, but I'd try a little simulation first with a small rdesktop window over the internet, see how you like it.

ahyes good point. thing is i'm tunneling to the university servers sometimes these days and it's pretty smooth on a normal home broadband thing. but yeah, good point about the size.

Lord Graga: I think I have pretty normal sized hands. However the EEE keys are really small, at least in Y-direction. They should have cut down the size of that touchpad (I prefer to connect a real mouse anyway) and made the keys bigger. As it is now they keys are like 2:1 in width to height ratio...

The GBA stuff is kind of on the back-burner, I seem to have entered an 8-bit period of my life now! :D

Today, 2 of my coworkers bought a Medion Akoya 1200. Looks like a very decent little laptop and it's cheap as dirt (400e).

I tried the EEE but I couldn't live with the keyboard so I opted not to get one. The Acer Aspire One keyboard, however, felt right from the first touch, so I got one of those. The battery life is shit compared to other netbooks, but overall I'm very happy. I'm installing Kubuntu on it right now..
