ZINE - The Radio Show

category: general [glöplog]
there are none coz its all just about presentation of some individuals and their job opportunities

trace: you said "what attracts people to the demoscene are outstanding demos, not people talking about demos." So why did you give the presentation at Euskal then? I think it's a combination of both. People need to be shown the demos via presentations that explain the background a bit, imo.

dipswitch, for sure, it makes no sense to approach the outside world if we do not first achieve a mutual understanding in our inner environment. but i think we have mostly accomplished that mutual understanding by now, at least from my personal perspective i can do nothing but confirm it. so now the next step can be taken, and more people are chipping in on that than you might guess at first, sometimes unsuspectingly even. for example, i know a guy from germany who organizes netlabel parties alongside demoscene events, which i think is another fine example of "outreach". even if it is undeniably something completely different to giving a lecture at SIGGRAPH, or spreading some flyers at other events. :)

okkie, does it really matter why companies, institutions, famous artists and gamedesigners, etc etc are supporting us? the anarchistic nature of the demoscene impossibilizes a takeover by definition, so i see no objections against this "gefundenes fressen". :)

maali, you know damn well where those newcomers are :)

xenusion, are you referring to me? that's rather funny, actually :)

I think xenusion is talking about Gloom's outreach project. He thought they wanted to work at Pixar or something.

And well, I'm not talking about any takeovers (I miss Takeover :( ) or companies ruling the scene. I just don't get the 'why', but that's probably me :)

Okkie: I guess the simple answer is "ripple effect", pretty much.

as far as i'm concerned, the only relevant contribution of demoscene outreach is that it builds connections between sceners and people/companies with money who are willing to sponsor scene events. make no mistake, that's a major affair, and a very good reason to do it. it allows us to have, among other things, scene parties that are way cheaper than they normally could be, and an infrastructure that is nothing short of amazing. all major scene-sites are 100% ad-free, there's the scene.org file archive, completely free web hosting for all sceners (scene.org/untergrund.net), our own streaming video sites (capped.tv), radio (bitjam/nectarine) and an internet tv station (demoscene.tv) that shows demos 24/7 and streams live from a bunch of parties every year. (NB: i'm well aware that not all of the above sites/services are sponsored from outside the scene, but most are).

outreach shouldn't devolve into an advertising campaign for the demoscene. but the outreach i've seen isn't, anyway. showing demos to an interested audience that's never seen anything like it before isn't advertising - it's just damn great fun. in that sense, the best ads for the scene have been, are, and always will be, demos themselves. and (in my opinion anyway), if the demos aren't cool enough to speak for themselves, they don't deserve someone to do the speaking for them.

it also shouldn't be about convincing people to make demos (either they want to themselves, or they don't), although it's obviously a good idea to have someplace to direct people with an interest in making demos to. in some small tangent, i don't really get why that shouldn't be pouet, and i also think the embarrassment a lot of people feel about pouet is overblown. yes, there's a whole bunch of trolls, random tangents, incoherent babble and tasteless pictures. big fucking deal. ever seen some other internet community site? pouet certainly isn't a shining gem, but it's also not even near bad enough to be ashamed of it. so deal with it. (end of tangent).

i never got the "but i want it to be underground" bit. that's just backwards. demos have their own (admittedly somewhat inbred at times) aesthetics. if the audience is simply very small, fine, then it's bound to be underground. but my experience has always been that a lot of people actually find demos cool once they seem them, they've just never seen it before. of course it would be absurd to "change demo style to make it easier to digest for the masses" (however that would to work), but to me it makes no sense to me to stay underground just for the sake of being underground. but that might just be because i like to actually have an audience for my productions. insane idea, i know.

Ryg: Actually, Scene.org is working on a landing-page for people who want to know more about how to _make_ demos, and a Scene.org representative will be with you shortly to ask for massive favours. ;)

ryg, there's a big blurry field between actively convincing people and pointing them in the right direction exclusively upon their own demand. wouldn't you agree that the amount of social engineering we engage in is much less relevant than the result of such actions? :)

Xernobyl: Yes, because one idiots comment on YouTube should define all demoscene activity for the foreseeable future. ;)

depend on what, and to my surprise not the age of the thing. most of my "non-nerd" (the worst way to put it, but everyone will know what I mean) love Hyperventilation for example. we crank it up and watch it while drinking on a saturday night :)

and candytron is also a favourite. they even got that mp3 on their ipods.

I should probably sue them for using a lossy format and thus destroying the sample-exact rainforest-like balance that is a soundtrack made with your own synthesizer.

Other than that I don't need to comment, do I :)
