Youtube or Vimeo?
category: general [glöplog]
Just a suggestion - why not use vimeo.com instead of youtube for demo stuff? From my (admittedly fairly brief with both) experience, vimeo:
- has a better designed site
- has higher quality video
- has an option for HD video streaming
- is not full of retards
- lacks cat playing piano videos
Any problems with it though?

Yes, apparently uploading more than a couple of videos with one account is a no-no. Or so I've heard. Also, not as reliable as youtube. Also, demoscene.tv rules (not hd though).
There is also http://capped.tv/
tomaes: I think the limit is that you can only upload up to 500mb per week, so it could be a problem if you have several HD captures to do at once.
keops: yeah. That one too, but a lot of people still seem to use youtube, plus there's all the 'non-demo' stuff we do (like I put captures of my various experiments up on there).
Bigcheese: haha, they stopped the video just as the cat bit :D Anyway, my meaning was that there's "less" of such videos compared to youtube. At least less emphasis on them.

i don't see the point. we've capped and demoscene.tv for quality, so all youtube can give us as a bonus is audience - for which it undeniably is the best place.
Ok, so:
Capped/dtv for general use.
Youtube for 'bigger audience'.
Vimeo for HD.
Oh, two more things vimeo is good for: you can download the original video file (so long as you sign in anyway), which is great (does capped.tv provide that? if not, it should :) and you can also mark videos as private (with a password, great for sharing stuff with your group).

there are already demos on vimeo. however, "in the mix". who's that matt bentley anyway? http://vimeo.com/1337237. at least the stuff is properly credited :-)
unlock: dunno, but i like it. Not sure it works all that well for me as a video, but it's great to bring back memories of a whole bunch of good demos at once :)
*considers putting 720p HD support in Capped.TV* Hmmmm... ;)
vimeo of course

I like vimeo a lot. I already use it to upload hd versions for our demos and embed them to our site. What's also nice is that you can download the originally uploaded file, not the re-encoded crap.
Youtube is not even worth the discussion.

Pixtur: well, it kinda is worth the discussion, because of the simple fact of exposure. People watch random stuff on YouTube, while they "seek it out" on Vimeo. Also, there are a lot of places that has YouTube support embedded, but lack "Flash Video" support.
That said, the -quality- of the encoded videos are on two different planets :)

I thought demoscene.tv had a pretty decent HD mode?

damn that matt bentley guy is a bad musician!
somewhat related to this, I have a question: why exactly does it take Demoscene.tv so long to add new demos? No Solskogen stuff, no Euskal stuff, while Capped.tv already added Size Antimatters.
Axel - I think demoscene.tv requires a admin to vertify uploaded content, while capped pretty much puts uploaded demos online immediately. Beyond that, both sites kinda need someone to upload the content first. ;P
blip.tv lets you upload your own .flv and keeps it untouched, for those patient enough to play with encoding settings
pssst - capped.tv lets you do that too, except with mp4/h.264 files. ;)
[and yes, recent versions of flash -do- support mp4, in case you didn't know.. capped also makes plain flvs as well for fallback on older players, after it pesters you about updating]
