Damn im glad i never had ATI then, never knew that :)
I never had any problems with LW & ATI, working with that compo for more than two years now.

LightWave is unstable because is badly cracked :P

what misioslaw said. lw + ati = crash? bs. get a proper one.

Random fuckings to ATI CCC...

C-C-C CCCCCCCCCCCCCCC BREAKER!

CCC is a heap of shit yes, which is why i've been using ATI Tray Tools since i found them. All you do is install the plain driver package and this then you're up and running with access to all the hidden driver features and tweaks available. So i use this tiny(less than 5mb) while running app compared to the behemoth CCC(70mb? installation not to mention resources sucked from your machine while running)

The 4870 is more of a beast of a card, and finally ATI are back on track.

Latest beta's of ATT Not with total support for any of the latest 48x0 features, but then again nor does CCC with 8.6s from what i understand. Feature additions don't usually take long as it's still in active development.

hmm now i remember as well the omega drivers
and i've always been baffled by how the hell script kiddies can possibly tweak the windows registry to end up with better drivers than the manufacturer :p
Bleh. BeaT DiZ.

Here's the real hack, tested with mighty XP Home version.

run->cmd->hit enter->command prompt window should appear.

then type: set dircmd=j

then type: dir

w00t! Thats what i call ##illegal telepahty##

omg old dos hacks that most likely noone (read: everybody) has seen before!

ive got a ati 2600xt at home now, im pretty happy with it - the drivers (despite the amount of stick they get) overall seem to have less cpu overhead and better overall stability during normal system usage than the nv ones (from my highly unscientific test of "using my pc for a few months"). it's fast and very cheap.
when it comes to opengl being dodgy though preacher isnt kidding. lightwave is basically unusable on an ati card bceause it crashes so much, but it's a-ok on nvidia.

smash: can you have a look here please? :)
Thanks for the ATT beta link!

NP, that link stays the same for each beta release, so either check the beta forums in the 1st link for updates or download every so-often and install to check :)

Bare in mind that 8.6s have some bugs in it, from what i've read if you set Catalyst AI to high you may just get a blank screen in some games/demos if running full screen.

Oh, and here is the thread for the hidden tweaks stuff. You can get easily 5% more performance out of your card, at least with my 9800XTD i could. Sometimes upto 15%, depends on the demo/game.

@Intrinsic

Does that work with Oblivion too? ;)

Prolly not, but thats not you fault. :=)

No, i dont want to hear nv "hidde'n'bits" optimized drivers :D

Intriinsic: What setting did you use? I have a 9700 Mobility...
added on the 2008-07-12 17:44:18 by raer raer
The settings i changed were targetted at Oblivion :D So yeah they made a nice difference at least for me. For Oblivion also checkout [url=http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html]this guide[url] for various INI tweaks which can help a lot too.

Not totally sure which advanced tweaks i enabled as on a different machine atm. Although one i do remember is Flip Queue size i set to 2 as a standard tweak, for Oblivion at least it made noticeable difference, not huge, but nice.

so anyone got his hands on one so far ?
Ok, I've checked it. Basically it works ;). No DX10 features in openGL, but it's compatible w 2.1 version. There are not too much differences in visual quality, the performance varies on type of fx you use. It outperformes GF8800 GTS when you have just fillrate oriented scenes. It's slower when using long shaders with lot's of texture sampling involves. It dies when using textures in vertex programs (NV is about 5 times faster then).

Bonzaj: I think only nvidia is supporting sampling in the vertex shader in hardware so far (at least this was true for the ati 2xxx series, I've not heard of it changing since), so the vertex shader will be run in software (and the textures used will be shifted into ram for extra pain). I'm hitting that particular problem a lot lately :/

no way, it's running in hardware for sure. I don't know about 2xxx and 3xxx series.

psonice: from the ati HD2000 programming guide: "This means that using texture vertex fetch is not just fast, but in many cases highly recommended" (http://ati.amd.com/developer/SDK/AMD_SDK_Samples_May2007/Documentations/ATI_Radeon_HD_2000_programming_guide.pdf).

Ok reality seems to be a bit different ;)

hmm.. just had a quick look and can't confirm it either way for sure. It seems that the cards support it, but opengl drivers don't so I'd imagine it'll affect all cards.

I'm on osx, so the drivers are likely different, but I can definitely confirm that in my case any vertex shader with a sampler in it runs in software, and I've seen many complaints about the feature being missing on windows, so maybe it's been fixed, maybe not. If you're seeing such a big drop in performance compared to nvidia it suggests something is wrong, as the ati manuals say that texture fetch performance should be equal to fetches in a pixel shader on the newer cards.

Good luck with it :)

cynic: yeah, that's what I'm referring to (you beat me to it!) It'd be great if it actually worked in opengl, as it is I'm having to cut down the texture size and number of vertices heavily to get some of my shaders running fast enough :/
