BD-J as a new demo platform ?

category: general [glöplog]

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BD-J : "BD-J, or Blu-ray Disc Java, is the interactive platform supporting advanced content for Blu-ray Disc."

it could be a way to hit masses in a few years (if it ever were an objective for some sceners...) : do you see psychedelic effects in movie menus or any hidden demo content, or even better let's imagine a BDJ cracktro in front of each unprotected BD release =)

woot woot ?

Sounds actually rather cool. But I'm also wondering how long it will take before a pirated Blu-Ray disc will root your player :D

http://www.nuon-dome.com/wordpress/

Nuon info, plus devkit, plus emulator, for those wanting to see what happened when they came out with this idea for DVD. (It got us Tempest 3000, and basically nothing else, but hey, there's a devkit and some demos...)

And files, and stuff.

And yeah I have a Nuon that is supposed to get shipped to me from the states... and you can find 'em on Ebay and such.

My thought is that this incarnation won't go any further than the Nuon, but yes, it is an intriguing idea.
What would (in a Blu-Ray disc) impress any non-already-knowledgeable viewers against a 3D rendered HD video?

I mean... when you put a demo in (adopting today's standards) 15 or 20mb in a PC, which looks (if you have enough gear) like a non-compressed HD video in a fraction of what it would occupy in a PC video, or you get some limited architecture and get something impressive out of it... well, yeah.

But on a blu-ray disc player, where people do already expect to see high-resolution stuff (maybe animated/abstract stuff), what is going to get them interested in the demoscene by using programming on them? What would be different of just embedding some badass HD video -for them-?

That's of course, just answering the original question, I always enjoy watching demostuff made on new platforms... but I already know what the demoscene is about :-)

Interaction.

Yes, heretical I know. (Cue the obligatory OMG-demos-are-not-allowed-to-be-interactive-it's-against-teh-rulez-of-the-demoscene discussion.) But presumably the reason for having a turing-complete language in there is to accept and respond to user input, so it's logical that that's where the strengths of the platform are. And playing to the strengths of a platform *is* what a large part of the demoscene is about, right?

Zest: I like the "cracktro in front of each unprotected BD release" idea. :)

DRM snoop protection!? Let's show 'em who's boss again by jazzing-up their boot sectors with a sine-scroller!

Interaction.

Using what? A non ergonomical d-pad and a few other buttons? Unless you something like the wiimote interaction with the player is at least boring. I've never seen a bluray player other than the PS3 so I don't know how the remotes are, but if they're as good as most DVD players remotes then interaction won't be much different than the already existing interactive DVDs (you press a key, wait 5 seconds for something to happen, the press another key..) and it will bring us back to what jco said.

I did play dragon's lair on the dvd player and almost managed to complete the game before getting (too) frustrated and finishing it on the computer.

BD-J is not primarily game-oriented afaik, it's supposed to 'enhance' bonus and menus, with features like picture-in-picture or internet access (to get some marketing-approved datas about how great the movies are...)
