Beggining demoscene

category: general [glöplog]
Scarvenger : trying size limited stuff to get started might not be the best idea. It might prove frustrating and time consuming, not actually leaving you enough time to have fun coding effects, eye candies, working on a a concept of ideas. Unless you're that kind of hardcore coder for who only pure code challenges matter ;)

As for "tutorials for demoscene making", I don't know if there is such a thing but I strongly suggest you don't rely on that kind of stuff if it exists. Things don't have to be done this or that way, they have to be done the way *you* want to show and do them, the way you enjoy them. There is no rule or guideline. All you need to know codewise will be found in generic code tutorials. The demoscene touch of it is what you will add to it.

You could start from a NeHe or DirectX sample, start to add your effects next to the exisiting code and that's where the fun begins :)

If you need a soundtrack, Nectarine and Scene.org have hundreds of unused tracks. You can easily get in touch with their authors to ask the permission to use them.

Having a fast + easy way to experiment is good I think. Something like werkzeug or processing, vvvv etc., where you can test ideas out without spending a load of time on code, get it right, then implement it properly.

keops: but by using a released track wouldn't he disqualify his prod at most parties ?

Zest, no and please check before asking rhetorical questions.

zest: ofcourse you would have to actually do a demo first..

As I've been working on code and gfx for pc demos for some time, but still havent been able to finish anything, I've been thinking a bit about the problem of actually getting started and I dont find the "do whatever you wish however you wish" type of advice that helpful even if its correct.

Anyway, there is some code around that can hint on how other do it, like Moppis demopaja and Outracks demo gamma and their api frontend.
Theres plenty of books available about games programming with directx that contain stuff that is useful for demos. I liked Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 9.0c: A Shader Approach . And Shaders for Game Programmers and Artists is good for getting started with shader programming using rendermonkey.

d'oh! that's why i'm asking.

but i think this may lead to dubious and biased disqualification... why was the wonderful i feel like a computer by melon dezign disqualified at the 2003 assembly ? because they didn't ask the permission to the 'ripped' musicians ? and why was there a controversy with the music of the übergreat suicide barbie by TBL ?

and what if permission is giving by the author on one of those 'unused' tracks on scene.org but in the meanwhile he's using 'commercially' this track on his last.fm page for example ?

wow, i didn't know frontend was so cool! too bad it's c++ but hey, nothing is perfect. anyone (other than duckers and co) who's given it a go any time lately?

zest: using copyrighted material without permission or creditation is abit different then making a demo of an yet unused but publically available track, wouldnt you agree? especially since gloom mentioned he should ask the author for the use of the track. that being said, some demoparties are more picky then others with reusing material. rob is jarig shouldnt really be disqualified.

so, if my buddy jacko gave (or sold) me his authorization to use Thriller in a slight remix to rock a demo for assembly, it's okay ? :]

^ This is a great tool to start in the demo making.

zest: you'll have to ask the asm orgas that question. i know that in most of other demoparties it would be perfectly fine. perhaps abit lame for using a known track instead of composing something more original but without much of a real motive for disqualification.

texel: this has been a constructive thread so far, if your only contribution is trolling please gtfo

ps: yes, your youtube video link is very related to the topic of this thread and very constructive.

By other hand, maybe telling somebody you don't know at all "gtfo" looks correct and respectful for you, but thinking in the possible interpretations by different people from very different cultures and countries, I advice you to try to talk in a more moderate way if you want to be respected as moderator.

The oldest demo I found for ZX Spectrum comes from 1985. http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0007258
But somehow I remember seeing something from 1984...? Hmmm...
Hahaha, I thought it's something like Demoscene Begginings;
gotta be too drunk now. :) :)
Excuse me. ;)
Demoscene Frodo Biggins
last year a brazilian scener did some really good first trys from my point of view. Don't expect too many objectiv/positive commentaries here, as you will be degraded as a lamer by most users here, if you don't make a demo like debris by your first try. :D (so don't take this place too serious)
preacher/elsewheres tipps are good

my first coding trys on all languages were always to code some breakout/arkanoid clones. or just some copyprograms/drawprograms. easy to code, fast results, but without any limits in features.

this is the bazilian? guy (I think this were some promising trys)
