Hello, there.
I just recently created an account here, although I've been to this website on and off for a long time, looking at demos and admiring the logos (heh)...
I wasn't "around" in the demo scene golden age. I never had an Amiga either (unless you count the A1200 I ordered new and played around with last christmas).
I got my first computer (PC) somewhat randomly (certainly not thanks to my parents) and kind of late, but have since always had that as my primary and - with a few exceptions - only interest/hobby (sad as it is...).
Anyways... I'm still stuck in time and just love old demos and the fantastic graphics of oldschool videogames and computer art/music.
Enough boring shit you're not interested it. What I really wanted to know is what GRAPHICS tools scene artists on Wintel use these days, and if you still do them "limited" to 8 BPP or so, or if most of you have moved on to using the most of 32 BPP or whatever is the standard today.
I suspect that most of you "oldschoolers" use older programs such as Deluxe Paint, but I don't really know.
I myself think that GrafX II is extremely nice (although my copy is 7 years old and it's DOS-based).
So this was some kind of short summary of me (that no one cares about) and also a request to talk to some skilled artists/sceners (does this all sound lame?), preferarly on IRC. Where do you hang around? :-)
Hope to hear from you!
PS: Kimmo is a male's name, just in case someone thinks something else.

the chickens use photoshop. the men have jasc paint shop pro.
btw i'm a very skilled artist/scener. you can find me on ircnet in, say, #pouet.net.

I'll see RICHARD's absurd statement and raise by advocating Microsoft Paint.
i thought real men worked on porting grfx2 to windows..
nowadays scene artists use a digital camera to make graphics.
Real men at least boot MS-DOS and use Autodesk Animator, but those with balls sit at an A500 and use Deluxe Paint.
PaintMagic on the C64 or DPaint IV AGA on an A1200 '030...
If you want to make it oldskool, there are several programs "inspired" on Deluxe Paint... not that I use them or have used them, but here they are: ultimate paint,[url=http://www.rlvision.com/artgem%5Fabout.asp]artgem (discontinued, but i'm sure you'll find a download somewhere), and [url=http://www.cosmigo.com/promotion/index.php]Pro Motion.
Have fun

oops, i fucked up bbcode... i'm sure you'll find the links anyway :)
I've used Ultimate Paint and it has not much to do with an oldschool gfx programm. The only good thing about it, was the concise effect explorer, which was something most "pro" software lacked of (incl. Photoshop). Fortunately, the Jasc dudes ripped the idea and included it in PSP8. :)
jcl, give me one good reason for wanting to "make it oldskool"
RICHARD: quoting him: "Anyways... I'm still stuck in time and just love old demos and the fantastic graphics of oldschool videogames and computer art/music."
Jcl: Ah. I've tried Ultimate Paint. It isn't so much of an "ultimate" painter, though ;-)
I actually tried a few for Windows and DOS, such as Neopaint, but found that all had some strong points but generally sucked :-(
There's quite possible to acchieve some rather cool oldschoolish effects by doing something in Photoshop and then playing with the "Indexed Color" mode.
I know that's cheating, but if you're lame like me...
I am TRULY impressed of the various Pouët logos shown randomly on this website. I have no idea on how to start drawing those "fonts". I take it that mostly you never even have a base font to work from, right?
Alright... back to wasting time. I'll look on IRC for Pouëtians also :)

IMO, REAL men use only hex editor for everything (gfx, coding, muzik, etc..) ;)
But... wtf has time to do everything by hand, nowadays? Anyway, it's best to try to do whatever it is you do, on the lowest level possible, as long as your brain can see the big picture, and keep it together.
PS. The scene belongs to Finland :P

pah, hexeditors are for whimps. real men use COPY CON!
If you've seen Ice Cream Castle by Crest, there's a good example for how a real bally 313373 does his gfx... There is a Crest logo, which was drawn by Xbow - with a debugger, directly into the memory! OMG WTF...
kusma: a real man's machine doesn't have such wimpy shit like 'copy con'. I actually did my first gfx on c64 in hex. It sucked big time :)
Personally, I think a combination of photoshop and paintshop pro does well, photoshop for the speed + power tools for getting the basics, paint shop for the pixelling part. But then my gfx sucks, plus the last time I did any was when photoshop 5 was the latest.

Tomcat: Not THAT unusual. Afaik, the really oldschool 8-bit musicians did it the same way with notes. :)
those damn oldschool bastards. they never fooled me for one minute.

this is like... the most bizarre remark i've ever seen on pouet, not to mention being completely irrelevant in this thread :)

Heh. I'm actually a (half-?)Swede with a Finnish name. I don't know a single finnish word; it sucks - I know <:\

lol, and that is probably the most strange comment i've ever heard from a Finnish scener ;p
