Vallejo and other such fantasy artists have their place, but you're not going to find any profound meaning in such works. It's generally high impact imagery which works very well on a mainstream level.
I'd say this is why dragons and naked women were so popular in the scene during the 90s. They were only shown in demos for a few seconds between effects, so it had to grab the viewer's attention instantly. And of course, the scene audience of the 90s comprised a lot of horny geeks in their teens to early 20s, so it was ideal back then.
