NVScene 2008!
category: general [glöplog]
count in the breakpoint sponsorship, if you wish.
Oh, yeah, forgot that in my frustration -- but yes, that's also a substantial piece of demoscene support.. and they also sponsored Scene.org, while we're at it.
NOW it's time for bed (norwegian independence day celebration tomorrow morning :)

gloom, so why do they do it? i still haven't figured that one out.
Not all corporate activity is evil. Some of it is, naturally, but don't forget that there are actually real living and breathing people with actual real human interests and sense of having fun working in those companies. Some of them have the authority to use company resources for sponsoring things that might have something to do with the company and that they find interesting.
If I worked in a huge-ass company that is relevant to scene/scener interests, I would do my best to influence the company to do exactly that.
(disclaimer: I know nothing about NVIDIA particularly)

i just hope every single one of the people who got a demobox will put 100% effort and a lot of time into making a good demo and actually get something done to enter. anything else - i.e. grabbing the free stuff and making a run for it - is the very definition of lame.
so, 40+ demos in the compo at nvision then? i guess the end of august will tell. :)

preacher, i'd be the last to claim corporate activity is evil; stronger yet, i'm happily living in the naive world of all companies being good and awesome. and people, in general.
nevertheless, nvscene costs a petty dime, and indeed as gloom so nicely illustrated (actually he wrote a pretty convincing argument *against* nvidia doing anything like that - i'd buy it if i was a manager there), there's a lot of risk involved. so, what's the final goal? it can't be just passion. or can it? i'm really quite interested.
smash, word. no need for contracts if there's a whole scene full of peer-pressure!

Remember Microsoft giving away xbox360s for Assembly last year?
Yeah..
I was just thinking ...
If someone would participate without taking the demobox ... and win ...
this would be an ultimate glory for him :P

Can we make demos using XNA for nvision?
yes.
bonzaj: or win it with an amiga demo :D
or with a demobox crash test fun compo modelized in full HD & physics debauchery \0/
Gloom, I'm still not convinced that 80 PCs *or* such an event pose even a minor threat to nVidia's financial year, but let's give that a rest as it's not really relevant. As for the "frustration" thing, I'm not experiencing any but I thought to have sensed some on your part though (paperwork, PCs in a warehouse, that sort of thing).
Don't get me wrong, I think this type of competitions/event are a welcome addition to a maturing scene but we must not forget to keep evaluating things. After all, we're all ever so picky whenever there's a new production to be thumbed up or down on this site, right? :)
As for Gargaj -- as I said, consulting sceners in this matter is the only right way to do it but that doesn't really add up to you guys running an international demobox-distribution centre ;)
Oh well, let's see what happens. I bet that there will be quite a few quality entries, it's not *that* risky.

on your part should be 'on your end' -- jesus, I'm getting dumber by the day.

Why should it? I mean; if this effort isn't "expensive enough" from a fiscal standpoint, does it not matter?
Oh, and Smash hits the nail on the head up there. :)
Btw; disclose a list of groups/people who got a demobox kit - yes/no? What do you guys think? We've been going back and forth on that point for a while.
dude, we have to get the boxes to them first :D
I can stop the feeling that the demoscene is selling it's 'soul' to intel, nvidia, pixar and the lot. But times have changed ofcourse since the old days... I hope to see some cool demos!
Magic: I couldn't care less what you think. The fact that you put "Pixar" in that sentence just goes to show that you have no idea what you are talking about, as usual.
well he actually said "I can stop the feeling", which is a good thing i guess :)
of course a non hardware accelerated demo will win

I think some people will apreciate that. I don't give a fuck. You have your reasons for choosing who gets one...
No one wants to buy my soul. Can I put my soul on the stock market to see what happens?
To the whiners:
FUCK OFF. The NA scene is tiny enough already without you deliberately trying to antagonize the few people and companies that are trying to help it. Maybe you don't want there to be parties in NA? Me and blackpawn hanging out shouldn't be 1/3rd of the US scene.
We've got one stable party per year in a town that's not a tech center. We could use another, especially in SVC. Especially one that has a lot of other creative enthusiasts (animators, machinima folk). They _know_ that if the party is lame that no one will come. That's why they're making sure it's not lame. That's why I pour so much of my life into this crazy little hobby - we will never get pinned down into some exploitative commercial hole. We'll go back to twisters and chrome spheres on the GBA first.
That said, I really hope ATI 'responds' to this party with one of it's own. Having them try to one-up each other through parties would _rawk_.

Gloom, it was 04:00 when I wrote that.. :)
but since pixar is using the demoscene to attract new employees
its not benefitting the demoscene in general but its a good oppertunity for the sceners though..
agreed that it doesnt look that good pixar included in that one sentence..

Magic: I think you're using the wrong words - noone is "using the demoscene to attract new employees" - that would be the complete opposite of what is happening now. If you look at scene.org/jobs.php, a lot of companies are trying to hire people with demoscene experience, but none of them are saying "Look at us! We are very INTO the demoscene, and that is why you should work for us!" :)
Either way; I see no problems with with people wanting to hire sceners, it's been like that for ages.

i'm all for publishing that list. it's not like everybody's going to socially exclude people who got a demobox and didn't do anything with it. i think it's mostly a personal motivater, sort of a friendly public kick under the butt. do it real soon (so get them those boxes allright :), though, and not like after the event. that's screwing people over.
