looking for theme ideas for a miniparty wild competition
category: general [glöplog]
on june 15, I'm having a mini-party in San Francisco, with a wild competition. i decided the wild competition should have a theme/concept to provide an additional challenge for those who enter. (sorry, no remote entries.) but I have no idea what the theme should be. does anyone want to suggest a theme for the competition? (liranuna: you can't pick the theme! :)

gd: I have an off-topic question about DemoNews: After DemoNews #87, in April-June 1995, five issues of two newsletters called Hornet News and 01 Articles were released. Were they supposed to replace DemoNews or were they released in addition to DemoNews? It was before I entered the scene, so I'm curious. There were DemoNews issues of April-June 1995 which apparently contained roughly the same contents as Hornet News and 01 Articles. Were they released in retrospect after it was decided to continue with DemoNews to fill the gap, or what was the story? Thanks in advance!
SCENILITY
hi Adok:
First, I'd like to clarify that I was a contributing editor to DemoNews and its related newsletters. During the time that I was contributing to DemoNews, Snowman was in charge.
Fortunately, I found an archive of the hnews issues, so I can give you URLs instead of rusted demoscene memories. Apparently, I wrote the intro to the first issue of hnews, although unfortunately I didn't exactly clarify what the newsletter was about:
<a href="http://www.bexxx.de/projects/myfirsthomepage/texte/hnews.001">hnews.001</a>
Here's a quote from hnews with the subscription information, describing what the three different newsletters entailed:
"There are three public newsletters produced by Hornet:
demuan-list Listing of new files on ftp.cdrom.com /pub/demos. This is really the home-base list. If you subscribe to only 1 of newsletters we offer, make it this one.
demuan-article This newsletter has timely articles dealing with many aspects of the demo scene. This is a serious newsletter and not to be confused with hornet-news.
hornet-news Hornet News is an informal newsletter. There are editorials, opinion columns, and humor dealing with many aspects of the demo scene."
Ultimately, Snowman decided that the experiment didn't work, or maybe he found it too complicated to manage three newsletters whereas he only managed one in the past. I think part of the problem was that many of the original subscribers were entrenched, and weren't interested in signing up for two more newsletters.
So Snowman went back to the old, unified DemoNews textfile concept. Then he modified history by taking issues of the three disparate newsletters, and melding them into single issues of DemoNews that didn't originally exist. It made things a lot easier when DemoNews went into prime-time syndication*.
If you're interested in these bits of scene history, take a look at TraxWeekly, which was a periodic textfile about the tracked music community. It primarily involved the North American scene, to the best of my recollection. I'd love to go searching the net for TraxWeekly too, but I'll have to schedule that for some time in the future.
(*): I may be exaggerating slightly here.

Hi gd, Thanks for your posting, that has answered my question. TraxWeekly as well as DemoNews are available at subdirectories of http://www.scene.org/dir.php?dir=/mags too. I'll take a look at TraxWeekly.
