Good pc spec for new demos

category: general [glöplog]
I have to ask the other way around:

What is a good demo that actually uses a current medium- to high end pc? (Eg. Core 2 E8X00, Nvidia 8800 or ati 38x0)

I still have to get used to you bootlegging my icon, Calexico :)
is it true that the core 2 duo processors won't work with windows xp? or have I misread something?
Calexico - go for plastic - final audition, it doesn't run on anything... ;)

/me has a mobile core 2 duo and it runs fine (with both cores) on XP. XP has a fixed limit to use only up to 2 cores, so if you have a core quad, you will use 2 cores only. CMIIW.

Or try Einklang's "The Beauty" on high resolutions... slows my dual core/8600GTS down to a slideshow in the "bouncing aliens" scene :-)

The beauty ran nicely on the new 9600 equipped pc...
MY current machine is AMD and ATI which at the time i got it were top, and as much as i prefer AMD and ATI products atm they suck compared to Intel and NVidia(although i relaly don't like the drivers myself! ATI has been fine for me) but the 8800GT is just too damn good of a card to pass up. But of course ATI are well ahead with their next card so that is due soon-ish from what i hear so maybe they can get something decent out the door.

hornet, Final Audition works even in my 4 years old agp radeon9800...

Final Audition works pretty well on my lappy: T7250 2GB mem and Geforce 8600m gs.
mihi: That's incorrect. XP is limited to two physical processors in Pro, and one in Home. As far as I know there is no limit to the amount of logical processors you can use, your wallet and sanity not withstanding.

Everything that's atleast ten times better than an Intel (R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller should be considered affordable.
Caffeine demon : the 8800 is slowly becoming the new standard for the scene, like the 6600 once was.

Most demos (if not all apart from a few rare exceptions) are GPU bound so the cpu should not be a concern unless you have some really old crap :)

As for SLI, I would not recommand it for the various reasons we once discussed in the BP08 thread.

Also, avoid ATI because you will always have to pay more for equivalent performances and features.
