Question to you web tech guys about 3D... make me earn my bread.
category: general [glöplog]
Make my job easier: what's the state of 3D on the web?
Can flash already display 3D without software rendering shits? Or is it better to use java?

The only reasonable 3D renderer for flash is Papervision and it's still software rendering with many limitations. Java has OpenGL bindings.
there is another 3d flash engine which seems to be a lot better than papervision

VRML2, java3d, papervision
emzic: wow! that's really nice engine. is it available for free? (i can't see any download link).
I think shockwave has 3d acceleration, not sure how much it's used though
Is that flash 3d engine free? I couldn't understand from the page.
Java is probably better for what I want. I will assume that everyone has java and flash on their computers.

mmmh Alternativa improved a lot since last time I checked it.
Honestly if I were to to 3D, not in JS, I'd go for Flash 9 as almost everyone have it unlike other plugins or a specific JVM.

xer: Shockwave 3D, I would say.

I'm not really interested in web technology but I always wonder why Flash hasn't got any proper 3D acceleration support yet. Watching those software engines in Flash is like going back 12 years in time, they make my eyes hurt.
because they probably dont wanna burn their fingers on portability gaps, even when using smth like opengl.
Adobe is going HW with Hydra aka Flash 10, and they seem to support some sort of pixel shaders.

Unlike Flash, the Shockwave browser plugin is not available for Linux or Solaris despite vocal lobbying efforts.
*cough* just use unity *cough*

Trace can probably say few words about 3d on the web...

I've some stuff on his blog or page or something about the issue.
heh when i was reading cyberpunk books (and watching cyberpunk movies) in the 90s i thought that webbrowsing in the 2000s would be all through 3D interfaces :>
who will finally bring pouet3D to teh world ?

Pogo Browser
Well, not exactly full 3D but quite nice GUI. Too bad it's hardware requirements are ridiculously high - 2GB of RAM and 256MB VRAM!. I think people will stop complaining about firefox being bloated. ;)

Pogo has some neat ideas but they seem lost in all the useless bells and whistles.

is it me or the PoV is totally wrong on this one?
FoV* sorry
are shockwave apps allowed to do any TCP/IP communications?
