AtariXL vs C64
category: general [glöplog]
C64 has 4 Channels too, 3 out and 1 in ;) (I'm running...)
The A8 has 6 channels then ;-)
My satellite receiver has 1300+ channels \o/
My IRC receiver has 45863 channels \o/ \o/
Chuck Norris has a C64! This proves you Atari-ones all wrong!
scheisse. jetzt haben die c64 leute mit dem schwulen chuck norris doch noch am ende recht *gg
He was using the C64 for training the Roundhouse Kick.
Yes. He knows everything from International Karate! Even Chuck has respect from the quick response of a C64-controlled Enemy...
chuck norris wins IK by resetting and POKEing his fist into the face of the computer player sprite

Seemes that the Spectrum has no lowercase-keyboard...
ATARI 800 XL wins over C64, because 800 is more than 64. There! IN YOUR FACE!
You forgot that $C64 = 3172
true but $A800 > $C64 :)
well, actually $10000 = $10000 ;)
$10000 on C64 perhaps, but A8 only has $F800 available.
I have a better idea. Why don't a few of us just get together, and make our OWN 8-bit platform. A computer that was made from the beginning with the scene in mind?
I've toyed with the idea myself, but why not...say...
WDC's 20MHz 6502
SVGA graphics, 320x240/640x480 256 colours
Stereo SID, POKEY, and AY-3-8910 on FPGA, (maybe some analog CEM3328 filters for fun?)
4096-8192k RAM
Only question left is, who wants to write the firmware? ;)

@krang: This is exactly Spritus/Resident's idea for many years. But I don't support this. Because we all love our machines and we love breaking their limits. "AtariXL vs C64" subject is just a joke (even some ppl get this topic seriously). I would like to have a mutant 8-bit machine maybe, but just for my collection, not for demo coding.
C64 cannot possibly win, because ATARI 800 is XL! Extra Large == 8-Bit on Viagra!
I know Atari is XL. Almost as large as C64 ;)
Salinga! We need no Viagra...
Seriously. I think one of the most important mistakes of Atari was to keep the 800er Architectur closed until they could not longer provide secrecy. In the first years there was nearly no documentation available, only a few developer of the firm itself had the information for coding on this machine. Even Steven Levy in his book "hackers" mentioned this politics of Atari. Commodore was kind enough to release internas in the early stage of the C64-Ariving. In those days (Altair, Apple2,VC20 etc.) the Computerfreaks were mostly interested to do stuff on their own... they wanted to understand their machines to the slightest bit. Maybe this stopped the Atari from competing with the C64 in the first decades... afterwards it was too late. Commodore has taken over the whole marketplace... and if you own the market, you own the software-companys and with that the scene around the games (later on demos).
The same happened with Amiga/Atari ST. Commodore always was too good in marketing while Atari was not able to get back to success after their reign in late 70s.
Enough serious stuff. As mentioned before, Chuck Norris has a C64 and he will be able to programm the 8th bit of the 6502 Status-Register at Breakpoint2009. Maybe. ;)

the odd thing is, there's literally tons and tons of ancient coding documentation for the 400/800 systems. there were programming clubs for the 800 releasing stuff as early as 1979. the first nationwide newsstand magazine with program listings was launched in april 1982, around that time the c64 still had to complete it's first steps in the market. so i doubt atari's supposed "secrecy" would be the cause of the c64 victory.
a much more likely (and mundane) explanation is the price and availability. the atari800 and it's successors were on average 30-70% more expensive than the c64 and only a slight bit better technically speaking (hello oswald!). atari8's were mostly sold in specialized computer stores, while c64's were sold in nearly every department store. who's gonna spend €100-200 euro extra for an older system that performs only marginally better and that forces you to buy upgrades from an overpriced dealersystem?
