Rc55 said: Some people (not implying anyone here!) are still under the illusion that the music industry is profitable, when the majority of producers and DJ's I know generally have full time jobs to supplement their hobbies. Profit margins for indie labels are so slim, it's a wonder they even bother. This is only what I've seen in /my experience/.

I can't say more to that. This is a true statement. It takes courage to setup a label business nowadays.
So all the shit I've been reading here for some pages is quite pathetic from both parties.
This US dude may be half-wit for what he did. The label is certainly not involved in that.

All that chiptune stuff is really a something for initiated peoples not to say initiated folks.

So instead of brandish a mob of lawyers where an action is always a bottomless pit you should just take advantage of the situation and leave this guy where he has been probably for a long time: in despair for what he is.

Maybe it would be the difference between someone with a maturity of mind and someone without.

Wow.

I recieved a mail from the Mushpot Records label about all this yesterday (April the 2nd), and even so i couldn't help thinking it was a late April fool joke from a friend. But no, it's indeed not.

Reading the Brandon Harrod guy's statement on all this, he clearly seems to have a mental need for recognition. It almost reads like a junkie story, with tragic dénouement and all (upcoming, "The Laromlab Diaries"?).
But indeed he pushed this to the point of commercialy releasing a record with stolen tunes, so he clearly had money in mind doing this.

It's a shame.

The reaction of Mushpot Records is clear and clean, they do not defend him or even themselves on the legal part and have stopped working with the guy, so there's not much harm left imho.

Ah, and reading the flaming "americans are dumb" comments, i'll just post this picture, Pouët style.

Ok, so here's a serious question about the Kentucky Fried Chicken (ah ah!):

He released a CD with stolen tunes and most of them, from what I know of, are just released as MP3, not that many are released as lossless formats (xm, it, mod, sid, ym...), that means that the CD is full of MP3 encoding artifacts, right? Not that it's easy to notice for most stuff, but...

I was linked here by a friend. I am personally friends with both Laromlab and Kentucky Prophet. Before Kentucky Prophet gets dragged any more through the mud, I can assure you that he had no idea that his backing track was stolen. I was standing beside him when Laromlab called him to tell him about all of this.

At first, he assured Prophet that the track was original, and eventually came clean about that track too. Prophet is devastated about all this and is attempting to contact the original artist to try to just get permission to use the track before having to reprint all his cd's. Again, he is completely innocent in this whole ordeal and has already taken the track off of all the online sources he could find it and issued an apology letter on his MySpace profile.

As for Laromlab, I don't know what to say. None of us saw this coming. I did think it was strange from the beginning that he couldn't describe the process of making the songs more to me than he did, but I had no reason to doubt him.

I've been to his shows and my son danced his little ass off at them. So, kudos to the original artists for giving some of us a great time, even if unaware. To his dwindling credit, several of us would have never heard of this scene if it weren't for Laromlab.

I'm not standing up for him, I can't do that. He made a giant mistake and he is as embarassed and depressed about the whole thing as you can imagine you would be.

All I can say is I'm sorry this happened, but it did. Because of it, some of us got to enjoy the original artist's music who would have never heard it under different circumstances. I will continue to follow the scene as I'm sure several others will. It's over now, he obviously won't be releasing any more stolen tracks. Let's get this embarassing ordeal behind us all and move on. I look forward to new scene tracks. Whoever claims them.

BTW, the "scene" mentioned in the title of this thread isn't necessarily the chiptune* scene. You might find this wikipedia article interesting.

*As a sidenote, the word "chiptune" didn't originally mean tunes made for games console/home computer synthchip music, it actually meant tunes made in protracker with teeny tiny samples. I don't really care, i just thought i'd point it out for no readily apparent reason.

@dRaven43

Also, if you like "chip tunes", I recommend downloading this and this, and anything by YM Rockerz, although you'll need an atari ST emulator for the YM Rockerz musicdisks.

I can't imagine someone that actually did what he did to feel embarassed and depressed! Seriously (and I'm not even saying SRLY!)!

@dRaven43

Do you have Laromlabs earlier releases?

Certainly I like to call it "chipmusic", as I know what a chiptune is and music effectively made with a hardware or software synth "chip" is no chiptune.

As for the topic, well, I certainly think the label is trying to be as apologetic as possible as to avoid an obvious, huge lawsuit.

Whatever way this gets resolved, the authors need to get something. Editing a series of albums dedicated to chipmusic, with the artists involved in the scam and others, would be a great outcome of this for everyone. In any case, this has raised the publicity of the affected artists, much like the Timbaland or Zombie Nation cases have done in the past. Whatever happened to the Timbaland situation anyway? I lost track. At least the zombienation guy paid to Whittaker when using the Lazy Jones tune.

I can't make sense of this, I'm not sure if you're insulting me or what. Can you rephrase (or can anyone) so I can understand what you are saying?
