phantom beep

category: general [glöplog]
do you ever hear untraceable beeps in your house, room or apartment?

its happened to me a few times. for example, i never knew that fridges have a soft alarm that goes off when you leave them open - until about a year ago. same goes for domestic phone lines

only this time i heard a really LOUD BOOOP. nothing in my room is switched on - more to the point, my place is just one main room with a kitchen and bathroom. i tidied recently so i can see that nothing was plugged in and i know i shut down all computers and so on

does this happen to anybody? really truly untraceable noises? i have auditory hallucinations sometimes, but not recently - and i'm sure this wasn't one...

If there's something strange
in your neighborhood
Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

If there's something weird
and it don't look good
Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

I ain't afraid of no ghosts
I ain't afraid of no ghosts

If you're seeing things
running through your head
Who can ya call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

An invisible man
sleeping in your bed
Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

I ain't afraid of no ghosts
I ain't afraid of no ghosts

Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

If ya all alone
pick up the phone
and call
GHOSTBUSTERS

I ain't afraid of no ghosts
I here it likes the ghost
I ain't afraid of no ghost
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

If you've had a dose of a
freaky ghost baby
Ya better call
GHOSTBUSTERS

Lemme tell ya something
Bustin' makes me feel good!

I ain't afraid of no ghosts
I ain't afraid of no ghosts

Don't get caught alone no no

GHOSTBUSTERS

When it comes through your door
Unless you just want some more
I think you better call
GHOSTBUSTERS

Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

I think you better call
GHOSTBUSTERS

Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

I can't hear you
Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

Louder
GHOSTBUSTERS

Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

Who can ya call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

Who ya gonna call?
GHOSTBUSTERS

maybe it's that whole magnetic field thing that they talk about when people believe they have ghosts in their house or bad electrical wiring or something. maybe neighbors?

Neighbours? Walls can conduct sound well enough.
Btw: do you hear it also if you close your hears with the hands??

Yes i have arelly wierd soun going on. It sounds like dropping some papers. Nothing special but it occures every night at about 01:20. I think it has something to do with the ventilation.
I have boxes and boxes of random gadgets and toys in the closets of this house.

Randomly the batteries will die on them and they will start making random noises.

Scares the heck out of me every time. :)

1) Mice/Rats
2) Random components in fridges (no idea what it is)
3) Water stuff, the sound isn't what you describe but with some frequencies filtred and some none it could be when your neighbor smashes his IKEA water blender instead of romantically close it.
4) Paranoia.

A loud BOOP is aniway something a bit odd... try recording it! :D

That's probably your (or your neighbour's) smoke detector running out of batteries.
Could also be a low battery warning for your pacemaker?

broderick's idea sounds good. you'll know if it's an internal or external thing. it could also be a fire alarm? sometimes when they run out of battery power they make noises too.

internal (the ear and brain) can be causes too. auditory (and musical) hallucinations mostly don't happen until you reach a high age. but damage to the ears can be the source of beeping. some people have this beep so loud they would rather be deaf. AFAIR it's related to resonance in the cochlear membrane.

I used to hear a bloke shouting something in my house every day, for a few seconds, between 10am and 3pm. Scared the fucking tits off me every time. I'd check clock-radios, nothing. Phones/answering machines, nothing. It was a YEAR before I figured out it was a Windows maching running in the attic with speakers plugged in and left on...updating Avast Antivirus with the synth-voice notification.

Then there was a high-pitched noise in my parents' garage which, I asserted, could only be coming from the flourescent light's starter motor. My parents couldn't hear the noise because older people get that high-frequency roll off as their ears deteriorate. Anyway, I tore that garage to shreds - checked power tool chargers, the two Fender Twins and one Marshall head I've had stored in there for years, my dad's PA system, car battery chargers...

It was a roll of gaffer tape in a box pushing down the 'test' button on a battery-powered circuit-checker. Beeeeeeep. Moral of the story? Your house possibly isn't haunted, but you should definitely go apeshit and stay up all night disrupting an otherwise orderly household full of possessions in an attempt to appease your own paranoia. And a pair of AAA batteries can last for fucking ages.

hahaha syphus! that Avast thing scared the living daylights out of me a few times too, mostly due to too loud speakers. I have a thing for headphones too, and some guy whispering "your antivirus database has been updated!" inside your head can really get to you...

good stories :)

Actually, there's an interesting story that happened to me. True story. I'm living in a loft. About two years ago, every night I was hearing this noice which reminded me of a bunch of wimpering babies. By a bunch, I mean like 10-15 constanly mewling, squealing voices. It came from the distance and I was like, walking around the flat to locate where the noice is coming from, pasting my ear to the walls to find out which neighbour is making the strange sounds. Even my girlfriend heard it so I was definitely not hallucinating. I was a bit freaked out but tried to let it go since I thought as long the babies are making sounds, at least they're alive - so no satanic cult is nearby as they would probably sacrifice them. At a point I was even considering to call the police...
That continued already for almost a month when I had to install my wireless access point on the attic and while I was searching for a good place for it, I accidentally run into the source of the sounds: and oh my fucking god, it was a huge bunch of damn chickens!! One of my neighbours was breeding fucking chickens on the attic just above my flat - and their peeps really sounded like squealing babies from the distance (especially when filtered by the concrete walls). At that moment first I wanted to kill the guy who made my month a living hell, but after some breed-ins and breed-outs I went back to my flat, explained to my girlfriend what was making the noice and we had a long laugh about it.

So the moral of the story that there is most likely a very logical explanation for the nocies you hear.

Today I saw Larry King talking about UFOs at CNN. Coinicidence? I don't think so.

Jailbird - living in the cities in the UK, you often get foxes crying at night, while going through bins. Generally they cry when there's a dog in a house growling at them through the window. That sound is like NOTHING you've ever heard, in any horror film or darkest nightmare - without even the filtering effect of a building's architectural nooks and crannies. It's straight-up identical to the sound you'd expect of a three year-old human child being burned alive, or some fucking shit. Horrible. Especially when you're house-sitting for someone in the centre of London and you have NO idea what it is. The foxes are getting braver and coming further into the urban areas for food at night - I guess this happens in other European cities too.

That's cool about the chickens though - I hope you got some eggs and a decent stir-fry out of it.

dalezy - like Christopher Walken's mercenary on Sleepy Hollow? Oh, he didn't speak, did he.

Larry King's a fucking joke; it always amuses me when I'm abroad and the only channel I understand (apart from porn channels) is CNN. It's vastly amusing that he's perceived as being a bastion of serious journalism, rather than a Frost-esque peddler of piss-easy, obsequious questions. "So what made you want to go into politics?". Great! Ed Murrow spins in his grave.
