does it suck...

category: general [glöplog]

Does cracking suck? An unsolved question. From time to time I read some comments saying: 'Crackers suck, fukk piracy.' From the other side we hear: 'Illegality for life'. Well I do not wanna have a look of a 'wise guy' but one is undeniable: if +/- back 20 (and more) yrs ago there were no crackers (or hackers back then) the scene as it is now, would not exist. There is no doubt about it.
It is no use to write that the cracktros (the programmers in fact) had a big influence on the later demomaking, cause it is obvious. The demoscene's origin comes from crack community. One can not simply deny it and cut those roots, it is impossible. VD/FLT, MD/CSL what explosive mixes =).
I wonder if all those guys who are against the piracy have really bought their OS'es, development tools, etc.
Respect to the crackers (and cracktro makers =).

NB. I am looking for the following Ikari+Talent cracks (intros). If you happen to have it, just lemme know, please. I have visited almost all the major C64 stuff sites since... I do not remember. Negative. =/ Thanks in advance.

Warez sucks. It takes money from the programmers who make stuff, no question there.

But on the other hand, it has it's good side too. How many great musicians started off with a copied tracker for e.g.? And how many times have you needed a tool of some sort just once? Is it worth paying €100 for something you'll use for 5 minutes?

Personally, I think if you can afford it, you use it, and it's good software, you should definitely pay for it. Paying for some badly made pile of shit (not mentioning microsoft here btw :) is generally a bad idea, it just encourages more of the same. And copying some stuff (high-end 3d stuff is a good example) to learn it is fine IMO too, as it allows many people to learn some skills + get a job, at which point the company would (hopefully :) buy them a license for it... this is actually good business for these companies (and some of them know this + now provide free but slightly handicapped versions)

Just some of my thoughts...

Respect. Without them, I couldn't play (i.e.) at turrican, shadow of the beast, goldrunner, sword of sodan battle squadron etc :)

The first "demo" I saw was on a 520 Atari STF. A cracktro from the REPLICANTS (a big scroll & rasters, I liked to see it again...).

Since I fall in love with demos (dragons megademo, tcb cuddly ...)
I don't have a problem with piracy because the programmers and development will always get paid for their work. If they don't like the pay they work somewhere else. So the only people to lose out becos of piracy is the company directors. So what? They don't create the game, they get loads of money from other peoples hard work (the coders, designers etc) and then they cry about how pirates are killing the game/movie/music industry when what they mean is that THEY are losing money and they don't like that.
Wow, talk about flogging a dead horse. I thought this dispute was already over and done with.

Most -if not all- demoscene faqs and introductions credit the crack/warez scene for their origins. Nobody contests that.

What you seem to forget is that there was a branching in the late eighties, where the demo scene and cracktro scene grew apart. Nowadays, we have less to do with one another than in some glorious past, or whatever.

The real problem people express about cracktros here on pouet is their lack of technical and artistic merit, as well as the fact that some people spammed the prod database with tons of them.

Ofcourse they dont you dumbschmuck. Nobody goes into bizniz (ANY bizniz) for anything but to make the most money possible. And NO...if a game house goes bankrupt during development, NOBODY get's paid (belive me on this one) ...and that's a real bitch.
I tend to buy the software i use, because i have a sense of quality. I wouldnt touch software i wouldnt wanna pay money for anyway. Problem solved.

I can't speak for others, but I have never used warez for development tools. I either suffered with what was freely available (gcc/whatever), or I purchased the tools.

I don't feel bad about using pirated copies of software I could never hope to afford, but if there is a reasonably priced product that I like then I buy it fair and square.

I think piracy is still very much a part of the demoscene in some ways. I'm sure, if forced to pay for the software they use, there are many artists, 3d designers and musicians who just wouldn't bother, or who simply couldn't afford to be active in the scene.

When it comes to programs as 3dstudio or ligthwave, different musicprogs and other graphicsprograms I dont think the companies that makes them are to upset by the "small-mans" illegallcopy usage.. Beacuse that will only make companies to buy that product if the person who did use it starts working for them... Games are a totally different matter.

I'd like to check the harddrive of the anti-piracy game programmers for some mp3s

just curious ;)

To some degree i tend to agree with that. And what Wain and Psonice said.

It is a known fact that game companies thru times have "harvested" talents from the scene. And by that they are likely to have sold more licences.

With software like photoshop and reason it's another deal. Because i use both a lot. and im happy with photoshop 6.0 wich is cheap now. I got my copy legally for 200$ that is no more expensive than my flash new xbox. And i KNOW that i use more time with photoshop, so its only fair to pay. Same goes with Reason. Yeah it was pretty expensive. But compared to the 1000's i used to spend on overprices hardware it's a steal. And it's fun to work with.

There arent any good excuses but :"I do it because im an inconciderate prick, that would rather spend my money on boozing" ...it's the truth innit?

...But then atleast admit to it.

I just do it and don't care, since I get 30Euros pocketmoney per week. I am coding currently for anything than getting paid. And the professional tools are way too expensive. Of course, there are nice freeware compilers and programms too. My VC++, 3D Studio and my Photoshop are pirated and I have only used the first one till now. And of course my Windows :) I have only paid for software, for cheap games, I don't want to give more than 20Euros for a game, so I mostly buy 1-2 old republished games that deserves their money. But I rarely play games anyways..

Ok, perhaps.. but GTA3 was not made by them and today and you are dissing it too. Personally I loved, love and will love cracktros made in an old Amiga/C64 spirit.
