Optimus: You make some valid points, but sometimes it's hard to find them when you write so randomly. Have you considered writing your thoughts with say an article/essay structure, or, as I think someone has suggested before, a journal or weblog?

the translation for the term "geek" doesn't really exist in "latin" countries (e.g. France).
We all remember these B-class US movies where the geek is represented as a mascot stroke by the stupid guys from the highschool football team. Bored of that, he becomes a "normal" and a stronger man who kick theirs asses, because it's certainly better to be a strong man to be respected and socially integrated.

I don't know any equivalent in french movie for example.

So, I never felt guilty of staying at home when sun was shining outside (I sometimes even drop the curtains to preserve the brightness of my screen ;)) )
and spending my whole time coding, protrackering, watching demos, copying disks...

I was a full "geek" (according to the characteristics of a geek) until the end of my studies and with the time, things change when u have a job, and being more involved in "society".

Anyway, I keep so good memories from this period of my youth. We were a community, we all had the same passion (demomaking!) so what's the hell?

Be a geek if it brings you positive things. It's your standard and one day you will probably need something else as a girl friend... very important... especially to make a decent cook when u'r posting on POUET! ;))

Ok, so first we deal with question, 'how geek to I consider myself to be?'.
Well, I don't really consider myself geek at all, I just consider myself, me. I hate labels, and all the comments and snide remarks and assumptions that go with them. So I spend 13-odd hours a day on my computer, I'm just being me, just doing things I enjoy.

Optimus, you explained things well, kinda in a random way, but in my opinion, the more random the better :)

Optimus: wasn't that ancient greek quote you gave from the times when being gey was compulsory in greece ;) you should watch those people...

Actually, you should try hard as possible not to be normal. Study genetics or bio-history or whatever, and you soon see that diversity is necessary for survival.

I think being healthy is more reasonable... it's important to get some excercise and fresh air sometimes. That can fit in with being a geek no problem, but coding for 72 hours non-stop with only coffee is really not good :) And yes, gymn is damned boring. People who enjoy the gymn are not 'normal' i think :) Actually, I know one guy who likes going to the gymn a lot. He's really fat, and only goes to the gymn to meet people, and he always goes the the bar afterwards for a few litres of beer ;)

i'm not a geek.
a geek doesn't drink alcohol, doesn't get involved in sex acts and gives a damn about the rest of the world :)

look up the word Otaku ...

In Japan being geek is being cool, which is exactly how it should be

The geek shall inherit the earth, didn't you know ??
I could never work 72 hours without sleep, even if I wanted :)

At the older times, I was so enthousiastic with the scene, that I didn't slept (at least when my parents were at the village and they didn't knew) all the night and I could see the sun rising outside. But today, I can't easilly do that. For some strange reasons I get so tired that I prefer to sleep at 3-4 after midnight ;P Perhaps I have not that much strong motivation to work for the scene till morning? And I don't like coffee..

Weyland Yutani: Isn't Otaku a japanische word for obsessed gamers? Could you tell me it's meaning in English/etimology? That would be interesting..

Charli: I am glad someone can read and make a sense out of it :)

I once broke the 32hours full computing without sleep record, I tried to break the 64hours one but couldn't make it :)

Oh,. sometimes I am even eating in front of my computer, but I only watch demos then, because I am so occupied to click upon the keyboard!

Optimus: I used to work all through the night too, doing 3d stuff. Best way is to get a few nice beers (not too many or you can't work :) and drink them slowly till sunrise....

And coffee comes later I think. I didn't like it when i was your age either ;)

AFAIK otakus are totally not cool in japan ... it's actually a disparaging comment. (like nerd or geek)

thanks for pointing that out, I had no idea ... scratch what I said :)
Ok geeks here is what you have been waiting for.....

The Ultimate Guide to Picking up Women

http://www33.brinkster.com/fearmoths/pickup.htm

You will all be pulling women and quitting the scene in less time than it takes to download a 256b intro on a TSL line!

I meant T1 or T3 line but I was thinking of The Silents?! Is that a fruedian slip? I do it all the time especially when talking to Shanes mum. :)

"Jeremy Saunders - Ultimate Gas/Fearmoths"

Well, that explains a lot... ShaneTheWolf must be French then... and Fearmoths are actually the comic duo French and Saunders.

to optimus:
[the point is not wheter i like or dislike your lengthy and numerous postings]

have you ever thought about putting your thoughts
in coherent shape on a scene and philosopy home page or even write an (online) book about that ?
i am serious, no irony intended here.
