Real definitions of oldschool or newschool software effects
category: general [glöplog]
just popped up a reminder in my head. I've heard something called a Vortex effect, but I really havent gotten the true/real meaning of what it really is kind of effect. how does it looks like and/or what elements makes it an vortex-effect? is it a name of an effect or am I just confused, its been in my head for a long time, and i just wanted to adress this issue so that i can get some opinion from the rest of the coders in the scene about this. or am I just confused about a name that doesnt have anything to do with a demoscene effect at all? if it has something to do with effects, does it have something to do with rotation and a texture wrapped effect like a simple 2d-tunnel (that use tables), or may it be a voxel tunnel also? what is your definition? or whats the real definition?
i was hoping maybe this thread could be some kind of informative on these kinds of issues, if there is more obscurity around other effects and definitions (its a rarely problem in my sense, but who knows what people might not know).

Effects have names?
yeah, just like a voxel-tunnel which is a name of an effect :)
Effects does not HAVE definitions, that's what's fun about them.
kusma: you imagine something in your head when you hear the word voxel-tunnel or voxel-twister or whatever you wanna call it. Roughly what i am out after is if anyone know if someone has called something a vortex-effect before, or if its just bogus.
hmm, vortex effect sounds to me like that oldschool kind of effect with a grid or a proper texture that warps towards a "black hole" in the middle. i think there were a lot in the early pc scene (wasn't there one in second reality?). it should be a pretty cpu light effect (at least with a grid) since you can set it up and then just change the palette.
linde: i think thats called a Wormhole though.
this is a wormhole:
That looks like a jizzing clown. And I bet it's not demoscene standards compliant too.
hmm, maybe it's like the opening effect of nexus 7, then? that looks like a spinning vortex
Never heard of the vortex effect before. Instead I know teh:
flaming eggballs
boing boing (or toing) effects
trailblobs
time dilation cube
twisting sister
sinusodial color clouds
quantum noise fx
dragonball cube
gin and tonic effect
and Larousse fractal clouds

LSD effect is the best and can't be achieved by code
i saw a vortex effect some days ago and it looked very much like a twirl, but then again it didnt seem to have been done by a demo scener
take a 3d object, apply rotation but rotation is influenced by point's distance to center (or whatever you like to swirl around)
thats what i long ago regarded as 'the vortex effect'

Niels: ..or "the excess effect" which it is known as in Norway. ;)
heheh. i had such an effect in tpb-01. and then some more.
but rudictive: look at vortex @ wikipedia

gloom: off on a little ego trip maybe?
Taxonomy is oldschool (and psilocybin effect is much better than LSD :)
Larousse Fire Fractals is teh SHIT!
Isn't that Larousse Fire Clouds?
when chucknorris roundkicked oldschool effects only hypnoglow survived
I agree with Niels. If you do it in 2d you can achieve a nice swastika and get away with it.
Preacher: Yes, or actually... it's "Larusse Fire Clouds" and "Larusse Fractalscape". My bad ;)
Man, I miss the days when all effects had a cool name:
Techtech
DYCP
Glenzvector
etc.
:)
