Ratatouille

category: offtopic [glöplog]
Yeah Ratatouille rules, but I saw Ice Age 2 yesterday which I think was even more funny.

tomaes: true. i wasn't very specific about 'animated features'. if the goal is a realistic protrait of human beings by the means of virtual characters, than of course, there's nothing wrong with mocap. it doesn't really qualify as the art of animation, though. because animation is a (more or less artistic) interpretation of movement, timing, dynamics etc. that works through not(!) being realistic. imagine 'the simpsons' being done through mocap and you know what i mean. yet, some directors still manage to mix things up completely (afaik, in the CG cartoon feature 'Monster House' mocap was used to animate cartoon characters -- wtf??).

gloom: the pixar guys are completely right. in fact, i still don't understand what zemeckis is after with his films. motion/facial capturing actors to generate eerie looking replicas in costumes when you'd get a more believable, intimate result by just shooting the actors in costumes in the first place? he doesn't seem so much motivated by a visual concept but more by a mere technical craze that serves itself. burning money, if you ask me.

Apart from that Beowulf is so deeply drowning in the Uncanny Valley that it hurts to ahve to watch it. Ok, a naked rendered Angelina jolie is kinda nice (love the fetishy rendition of the feet), but the rest? No.

On the topic of animation, a couple of month ago I bought this "aeon flux" dvd set. I'm late on the table here, but this is really brilliant stuff. I'm not sured it aired at all in europe, in any case I almost wish I could go back in time to watch it again as a teenager. I might have turned a better person.

From what I've seen and heard, the only way to watch Beowulf is in its 3d-IMAX rendition and that - at face value - it's really not that great. I agree with monroe that it reeks of tech-for-tech's sake, but he's slowly getting there. After all, Beowulf is probably a new era's lawnmower man.

YIKES nooooo I actually had managed to forget that movie, tomaes! Why did you have to do this?!

knos, hey, you started to remind us of "aeon flux" :)

(mhmm, now that I think about it, I probably have never seen that one. Oh, now I remember why)

only that knos probably meant the animated Liquid TV series ;)

kb, I guess so. ;)

Another recommendation for people who like off-the-wall fubar-animated madness: Furi Kuri.

i guess we can all agree on the fact that we're all pixar addicts, naturally.

What? I sure as hell am not and find that claim quite insulting. We're not all brainless, believe it or not.

Aeon Flux is great animation. From back when MTV was only 95% waste of time.

And no, animefaggotry doesn't come close. Ever.

"animefaggotry" ? Depends ! :) I remember being really impressed by the amazing Itano Circus scenes in the first Macross (1980'ties). Gainax Studio did such awesome piece of animations like "Wings of Honeamise". Then there's "Ghost in the shell 2", which goes really deep into merging animation and computer graphics/augmented reality.

Plus, I think Aeon Flux had Korean animators working on it (deeply influenced by anime...). So much for "animefaggotry". :)

Aeon Flux has anime influences but it certainly isn't anime. Which makes it watchable. ;)

The original "Ghost in the shell" movie was good, but I've recently finished watching both series ("Ghost in the shell: Stand alone complex") and they are ... insanely great!

Yeah, Gloom, lots of great scifi material in those ones. Lots of demoish scenes, too... And the music is wonderful. All in all, a big experience.

Definitely. Still one of my all-time-favourites. Too bad the second one remixed and recycled many ideas of the first film in a subpar way including the opening and the whole soundtrack in general.

Oh, and I think most anime stuff is getting outsourced (korea et al) to lower production cost, just like american animation.

gloom: Don't forget the movie. :)

It looks terrible though. Smooth cg backdrops and 10 fps char animation don't blend together very well. I wish someone would give these guys more money, 20 million dollars is not enough (that's about 1/7 of ratatouille btw.).

I watched Ratatouille yesterday: very, very beautiful! It caught me definitively since when it came out with the synesthesia thing.

+1 for Ratatouille's synaesthesia bit in Ratatouille, very awesome.

I was never a pixar fan (strange considering I am a computer graphics programmer but I guess I am just not impressed by prerendered).

But I'll watch Ratatouille now. Someone told me once that in ratatoulle you learn that you can be whoever you want. I had this thought today that I could be whatever I want, even a computer hermit if I am happy with it and I'd watch the movie so that maybe I find a clue or maybe I don't.

"Ratatouille" is my favourite movie. I never thought, an animation could get there, but there it is. I love everything about this movie, not only the technical aspects but also (set) design, cinematography, animation of the characters, the characters itself, the music, directing, story. I just love it, it's pure jazz to me. It pushed "Pulp Fiction" from its crown.
