The problem with technologically based graphics

@gloom: actually, I didn't namedrop it just like that :)
Wii games are to comedies what 360/PS3/PC games are to hollywood's big blockbusters. Comedies usually don't need visual effects while blockbusters usually hardly have a scenario (unfortunately).
Fortunately, people like Archmage and I who like old movies have MAME :)

You know, you really shouldnt namedrop. Robert DeNiro told me that.
Don't forget, the one thing that could make a sane person buy a PSP:
Ok so people tell me it doesn't have much lasting appeal (I believe they're lying), but it's definitely proof that you can still market 2D games where gameplay, dynamics and "feel" mean everything and it's hard to spot any trace of realism at all.
And something else many people seem to forget, is that sometimes high-tech realism is the easy thing to do.

LocoRoco rules.
keops, I'm scowling at you :)
It also seems that "elektroplankton" is working well but honestly, compare the amount of people buying these kind of games and the ones who only focus on car racing / soccer videogames :)
I think some games genuinely work better in 2d. I was always a fan of Worms, but when they turned it 3d it was so awkward and annoying! I much prefered the original Sims over Sims 2 as well. Monkey Island wasn't bad in 3d, but much better in 2d too, like most adventure games.
Kaneel: I would have paid good money to see that theatre production!! Any good?
Psonice: I suppose there's always the army but then you have to support the country, take orders and get bummed by other soldiers etc. I'd rather compromise on the realism I think.

Honestly, it was really amateur :(
Try out youtubing it, somehow you might laught because you actually KNOW about monkey island but thats all about it..

Best sellers ;)
Heh. And people were (and some still are) writing off nintendo.

Talking about old Japanese movies:

On that Best Sellers list that's a game that's still not for sale yet! WTF!
doom: ah yes - loco roco, another game a lot of us in the business would love to make, but sold like shit.
the people pays their money, they makes their choice.

Other funny 2D title:
Vib Ribbon. I've never played that one :(
Back then I found it at a good price. It can give some nice hours of fun, expecially considering that you can also use your favourite audio CDs with it :)
Which is why the scene is important.. games are not "allowed" by the market to experiment with esthetics =)
I HATED Vib Ribbon. It was not much more playable than Dragon's Lair or Space Ace and didnt even have the cool graphics.
(Unless you are toshio iway.. look up otocky)
Actually LSD is the best example. It makes amazing stuff out of technology lame technology (PSX) .. maybe precisely because it does not try to be realistic
Fear Effect is also a nice example of nice 3D graphics on the Playstation.
smash: Yes. "Only" 30000 copies a week. It's hard to imagine how anyone could make a profit out of only 30000 copies a week. ;)
But even if it was mismarketed, Loco Roco was still a very marketable game. Very few people didn't go "OMG I WANT TO PLAY THAT" when they saw the ads. My understanding is that the reason it "failed" (as in, didn't meet Sony's huge expectations reflected in hugely expensive ad campaigns) was the fact it was restricted to the PSP, while the ideal target audience were the DS and Wii owners. Ie. to Sony HQ it wasn't a game but a strategic attempt to revitalise an unpopular platform.
I came very close to buying a PSP when I saw this game. I figured, I'd been looking to buy a handheld games thing anyway, maybe I'll go for the PSP, then I could play Loco Roco. But then I thought, no wait, the PSP sucks. So I didn't. If it'd been a DS game I would've bought a DS Lite in a heartbeat, because I also quite like Brain Training. But.. well, fuckings to big business.

And.. eh.. the key point would be despite what Mr. Joshua seems to think, nobody looks at Loco Roco and thinks "PLZ that is so low tech pfft". They tend to think "OMG <3<3<3". So I don't really get what he's complaining about.
i'm buying locoroco for 20euros .. new one. i'm going to get psp
