flex is a kinda application framework for flash. Gives you a window system [as you see there] and allows you to focus on code for flash apps. Or something like that, I never really was a fan of it's price.

I would prefer something free (not crack like free) to flash.

Flash is proprietary anyway, so it can't be free.

Are there any free alternatives to flash?
Silverlight is free to code, right? But I'm not sure if it is supposed to be the same thing.

if you want something like flash editor for silverlight i guess you have to pay as well

Adobe has put Flex and ActionScript3 into open-source.

note that i'm not an Adobe fanboy, i'm actually pretty mad at the big corp because they have bought so many competitors only to kill their products :(
