blipfestival 2007

i can agree that not all of these new chiptune acts are as good as some older chip composers but some do bring new elements in, and actually build a live performance out of it, i'd rather see it and enjoy it for what it is then nitpick out of my ass on the good old days where we all stayed home geeking instead of attending gigs for the hell of it. and yes im quite aware that some of the old composers still do live acts and such, i still see nothing wrong about watching new kids dressed in silly clothes fool around with their gameboys. the overthetop retro hip thing is indeed laughable, which only adds to the fun of the performances in most cases, if you actually let it stand a chance instead of beeing a judgemental dick that is.
"over the top retro hip" - let's see, that would be the press play on tape performance at breakpoint, right? :)
true, most of the acts will be gameboy/nes, but from what i saw last year, it's not like they do super mario tributes. it's mostly original, non-game-related music.
anyway, thanks for keeping the thread bumped. :)

Ps is actually right here.
The old/young topic is just so u n r e l a t e d.
Adding new elements within the chiptune style is not wrong either imo (most actual genres are coming from the same idea of taking this and that element and see if it works well together).
And then, some of the guys playing are far from being "new kids" (go say that to virt eh).
I must admit I have quite some troubles considering all of this new hype around it but actually... why not (idm anyone? jazz?)

kaneel: virt is also a pretentious dick actually so i dont care much about other people insulting him with those "these new people dont know what real chiptunes are" bullshit ;)
Damn I replied and must have screw somewhere...
so... I was just answering to you 'ho yeah he can be'
But still
He made nice tracks :)

Virt is what Mahavishnu Orchestra would be if they had nothing but nintendos.
i like this "new" chip music but not in the same way i enjoy that old cracktro style music

to elaborate: i don't mean that i like it less or more... just differently
i'm completely with ps on this one. as far as i know, the chiptune scene has a long tradition in the US. yes, it grew completely separate from the demoscene (chiptunes have never been just an exclusive attachement of the demoscene anyway). these guys are around for years and the fact that they are able to happily pull something off like this (check youtube for some awesome blip 2006 footage) and manage to attract more than a thousand attendees as well as addressing contemporary pop culture speaks for itself. what's wrong with all that?
gloom: pardon? what's wrong with the website? the 8-bit scene and anything micromusic always had its own lofi aesthetics -- and so does this site. i'm not worried at all that it appeals to right people :) . including me.

Yeah strikes me of misplaced jealousy. The scene isn't the be all end all of computing-related niches or artistic endeavours.
there was actually an early version of the website up that had a better color scheme imo (more zx-spectrum-like than light pastel). but yeah, it's new york, a crapload of people are going to show up no matter what.
i wish people would show up no matter what where im from -_- cant even find an active portuguese chip act who can perform live, let alone crowd for it *sigh*
ps: I wasn't being that serious you know ;)
But what you hear from performing "chip" musicians IS very far from 80s/90s game/demoscene music, generally. They lost the happy so I wish they'd call it something else. I guess happy is gay now. I mean, it's one thing when the musicians call it chip music, cause it technically is, but it's just not, so I wish at least demosceners would call it what it is. Noise.
Either way New York isn't on my budget for 2007.

I think it's pretty ignorant to call acts like either virt (or ymck, goto80, jeroen tel who were there last year) noise. Same is true for most performers I'd say.
nicolas: if it doesnt sound like radix it aint real chiptune. everyone knows that!
Perhaps my antipathy toward most of today's micromusic scene comes from the fact that i've followed some of it back then and had to come to the conclusion that the only thing those people were good at was trying to hide their own musical inability behind their "its 8bit so it has to sound bleepy and goofy" attitude. Which, frankly, didn't work.
(and yes: virt, tel, goto80 and YMCK are certainly exceptions ;)

I've invented something that will revolutionize the Pouet BBS.
Use it wisely.

doom is
a pretentious dick.
yes, i can see the usefulness of the term.

Kb, if we want to be perfectly honest here, while I like some of the groups/acts themselves, I got to say I'm not convinced most of them can hold a candle playing live. A gameboy isn't the most expressive device to play with and headbanging while pretending to press a key between each sequence can look quite dorky. Some should not really pretend they are live musicians at all (maybe that's the reason for the focus on visuals there)
However that's only an issue of what tools they are using and what kind of expertise they have with them.

See, now I appreciate that you're not speaking categorically. You accept that I can be moderate and respectful in expressing my opinions, but that I'm usually just a dick. Cause only qualified statements can really be taken seriously.
Like, if I were to say, all commercial rap music is made by people who are completely disconnected from the "hood" they're "representing", and that there is a separate REAL subculture surrounding "proper" black/street/ghetto music, that would be rude and offensive. But that's where the magic word comes in.
And, you're welcome.

I like the do-it-yourself attitude of X|K for example. His sound is pretty much not the usual gay chiptune sound (gay means happy too!)
i like when people make stuff with old hardware and make it sound like something new and cool... some people on the c64 does it... for example jostintimberlake.
and not to forget Ed/Wrath Designs
knos, THAT's another completely different story (we went to a micromusic "festival" a few years ago with some M&S orgas, and the funniest part was when both the mac laptop the music was coming from and the two macs doing the video stuff all froze simultaneously because it was midnight and they had to optimize their HDs... (speaking of "what kind of expertise". Yes.).
But what I originally meant was even most of the songs themselves. I do quite understand and like chip music, but listening to most of hip retro pretentious dick-y neo-chip stuff I feel like my own parents must have felt when I was 14 and played Hubbard and Hülsbeck all day and night - only that I consider myself musically competent enough to know the difference.

mommy what's a chiptune
I'm sort of ~in between sharing your opinion and considering it too blasé.
I feel like pointing out how retarded and primitive punk music is, and how that made it good in the end.
(I've seen the primitive, I haven't seen the hip and the pretentious.. That'd be rich, acting like you're top of the world when using a famicom.)
Did I ever mention here how much I disliked the _pretentious_ epithet when it's applied to things instead of people? That use has become quite vapid .. And you never know when people act faux-pretentious nowadays.
