Atmosphere and perception

category: general [glöplog]

You know there's a phrase about looking at the world through rose tinted spectacles, well I think there's something very deep in that and it's something I often think about.

When it comes to the demo scene you can look at it and feel a cool atmosphere. Some demos feel kinda warm and cosy and make you feel part of an exclusive network. Others feel kinda commercial or mainstream and feel less cosy. I think that's what I like about oldskool demos and the oldskool scene. It's not like it was better back then, it was just more "cosy" and had a nice atmosphere. But I guess it all depends on how you look at it.

Some old fogies get all nostalgic about the 60s but I think 60s music, style and that lifestyle looks bollocks! I would hate to live back then.

I realised though that perception can totally change the way people see the entire world and what makes them happy or sad. I mean it's relative to every individual. When I go to wheelbarrow conventions with my grandad, he's all excited and dribbling, but I think the wheelbarrows are wank and the people are boring monkeys. But when I get a cool computer game, I'm the one dribbling and my grandad just sees a lot of complicated stuff and loud noise and doesn't like it.

So what I'm getting at is that the oldskool scene was never "better". It is just that a lot of guys percieve it in a nicer way. People argue a lot on Pouet about what is better, who had the right way and things like that, but you can't get your opinion over because it's all about your perception.

Does anyone here enjoy demos more when they are stoned? I used to come in from school every night, smoke a joint and watch demos until it was time to go and hang with my mates over the park. Great times, but those times are different now. I also used to make my demos with my mates, but now I feel like I am alone in the scene and it makes things different and not so fun.
Thanks for sharing.

Also, another factor is that you are growing older. It feels different when I first met the demoscene and it was a totally new world in my eyes and quite dissatisfied after so many years but that's just me.
