Why would someone use an opensource 3d engine?
Demoscene (well, the coder's part) is all about writing your own engine. Not to mention it's fun! :D
I USES YOURS
We stole the 3d engine from Peer.
LUL WHATZ TEH 3D ENGINEZ???????????????????????
hmmm, I'm just thinkin...because creativity & technoligy is always in motion..like moving from owncoded-3droutines to openg/Directx api...
Sometimes I dislike fixing engine-code because I'm in the middle of coding an effect.
Mayber my coding/engine sucks big time, maybe I should stop coding or maybe this is just a temporary phase.
thnx anyways for the perspectives!

ok my heart is broken, seriously :) . Well the thing is, don't try to code an engine or don't you stop coding. The thing is, let the engine be coded by itself upon your needs. Like just code that damn effect no one cares about the background code, no one will know if it's good or bad, and even if we'll know we won't care. It really doesn't solve anything if you are this perfectionist. This will lead to you finishing nothing. So, if you don't want to code an engine don't code it, just code your demo. Then when the demo is finished check the structure, bang you'll see that you have also coded an engine too.
DirectX or OGL
i've used ogre 3d to compare results against when coding
squezel: you konsumer you
I will answer this supid question : "A cross-platform theory"

Suposse you consider cross-platform developpement...

"engine" is a terrible word.

Why not?
i don't have a engine, i just have a routine to draw me some 3d, the rest is hardcoded.
There are some demos made with professional engines, by coders working on them. However, of course this is kept quiet about since usually companies doesn't want to be associated with all the gay pron contained in these typical demos.
I have no 3D engine :P
I hardcode everything.
Yeah.
Yeah.
i use ronseal 5 year woodstain. it does exactly what it says on the tin.
jumalauta (mac section) officially endorses the spöntz visuals engine!
I never go far from home without a tube of this!
And besides the steam engine, I also sometimes use pov-ray
visy you probably code everything with a screwdriver and a blowtorch considering the kind of platforms you code on...
viznut: wow, nice 3d engine! :D
