Best 486 PC demos?

category: general [glöplog]
What are the best PC demos that run under a 386/486 with Sound Blaster 16?

I already have Second Reality, by the way. I assembled some spare old parts just to run second reality, and I want more demos.
Paper! Wait -- does that require GUS? I don't remember.

Paper requires GUS.

Second reality is one of my favourite, Crystal dreams 2 from Triton is also giant.

and how did the s end up in "crystal"? =)

anyway, the following's not exactly a demo and not a beauty either - but anyone remember "beer makes girls look prettier" (also somehow known as
".. look much better" on my disk)?
that one must be from around 93/94, and for some reason that one's still stuck in my memory.

For the record, I tried Paper...my god that is impressive. But Yes, it is either GUS, or no sound. However, I started the demo in sync with dosbox on my main PC with GUS emulation, and had it running on two computers, with sound :P Pretty nice experience.

Yup.

Robotnik ran reasonable on a 486DX266 for some reason, though I cannot recall if SB16 is supported. And do try to get a GUS -the 386/486 era is pretty much dominated by GUS-supported stuff.

Now you made me turn on my old 486 and watch demos :)

Ok, here is the list I made: (some of them are 386 though)

Symbology/Admire (The jumping plasma cube on the flat landscape :)
Hex Appeal/Cascada
Holistic/Cascada
Saga/Dust
Untitled/Dust
Lunatic/Extreme (Great fast paced demo with cool transitions/synctro)
All Majic12 demos (some require GUS for sound)
All S!P demos (I think some require GUS)
Elements/Xography
Catch up/GRIF (Nah,. requires GUS but it's great with sound)
Cardiac/Infiny (One of my favorites)
Mars (the 4k voxel mouse controlled)
Contrast/Oxygene (LOVELY!!!)
Solstice/Valhalla (Great)
Despair/Iguana
Hertquake/Iguana
Inconexia/Iguana
Arabicum/Massive (Great 3d for the 486)
Teddy Bear's revenge/Eclipse (Respex!!!)
Fruitcake/Deus (My coup de cour)
Dope/Complex (Great 3d for 486, GUS sound)
Dubius demos (State of Hate, Machines of madness, great 3d, maybe kinda slow for 486)
Disgust/Camorra (Great for 486, I really like this one)
Juice/Psychic Link (Amazing! Lovely!!! Run almost well on my 486/100)
Act1/Psychic Link (Something very strange happened and it freeze my 486, it doesn't even go to the options menu, freezes in DOS when I just run the exe. Strange, very strange, I don't remember this bug and tried all memory configurations and stuff. But lovely demo!)
Realtech demos (Dimension, DX project, Countdown, the Aquarium thing. Just also try DX project benchmark to see speed of your gfx card, I use this one for checking which of my bunch of graphics cards I collect is faster. My 486 did 200 or 128 with another card (the first card was better for the Pentium because there it did 920 with fastvid enabled, so I kept the slower))
Fashion/Logic Design (Great)
Vista demos (Xcursion, Drain, Lithium)
Flight/KMFM
Zero Gravity/Blasphemy (Somehow I like this one for the music and 3ds and simple 3d stars merged with treedees :)
