hardeware hungry videos
category: general [glöplog]
The way i see it is that there are different things you want from a video, depending on the situation:
A really top quality capture to watch on a mac or whatever
A low quality capture that will run on an old laptop
A video with small file size as a preview to see if you want to waste a load of bandwidth
So I reckon it makes sense to do a high quality capture, then make a lower res version as a preview or to run on old hardware.

Shifter: Well, be the first yourself and control the suspence. ;)
if you got crap hardware you could re-encode the videos that don't work.
nutman: I'm not the guy to do that. Aren't you supposed to bitch that the videos won't run on your Amigas? :)
Shifter: I think you got me all wrong. That's why I looked so oddly at you, when you shouted "Booooo! Amiga sucks!" at me at BP this year. I thought: "I know who he is, but what the hell is his problem?" :)
So, does anyone know what Shifter's problem with Amiga is? ;)

True, and you were putting it mildly to say the least. But this will most likely snowball to the point were I can't wait for the first thumbdown because of the codec somebody used for a capture.
Hey, that's the scene evolving again :-)

I sure do. It's zealot crowd is my problem with Amiga.
Shifter: Well, I'm pleased to tell you that I haven't owned an Amiga for 2 years now. And I'm pretty sure I never screamed "Amiga rules!" at a demo party. However, I was once told that I once, punch-drunk, threatened to hurl myself onto some PCs at Mekka Symposium, but that's second hand information. I'll deny everything until proven wrong.
Besides, what's really the point? I use whatever platform I'm confortable with and so should everyone else, in my opinion. Hell, I might have thrown the occasional zealot's comment here and there (haven't we all? Or, haven't we? ...really???), but let me buy you a beer at the next BP and see that we CAN go along despite the differences. ;)

But, besides that, Amiga DOES rule, of course... ;) (Phew, got the zealots off my back now, hopefully...)

A-HA! Somebody hand out the rakes and torches, we got ourselves a poser! :D
Heh, nah, just a realist, really.
Seriously, I always liked Amiga and it's tons of fun watching our stuff on big-screens and such. But going back to Amiga to make music? I don't think so.
I'm pretty sure I would find it much more exciting, had I been a coder.

hooray for more noise prods in HD \o/ :D
Normal demo in HD: 250MB. Noise demo in HD: 2.5GB. :P
I'll have to agree a little with CP. But i think asking for a special kind of video is not a good idea. Especially not on pouet. Not because someone like Shifter comes up and calls you a lamer, rather because there are Demos for YOUR platform too!
(I enjoyed Heaven 7 and the Fulcrum very smoothly on my notebook)
For really low end computers, videos must be like 400x300 simple Divx with mp3 codec. Which is very close to Youtube. And i can watch youtube videos fine on my Pentum 2-233 notebook.
I have some kind of program where i can download the youtube videos. I know, its a lame tool thats unreliable and so on. But it works fine.
Todays Videos that come accross work fine on anything that looks like a pc you find in the dump. I picked a athlon 1000 a few weeks ago out of some Pentium 3 and celerons. It works good with these 720x380 videos. My P2 notebook works fine with youtube versions.
A youtube link and a link to a video are both fine with me. :P

so, my xbox has no problems playing 640x480@30fps xvid, or 720x576 interlace video. something like this should also work on your pc
xbox even does 640x480@60, that's why all my captures are done that way ;)
DivX Web Player ftw ;)

Not a bad idea.
A nice/lightweight transcoder I sometimes use: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
Now going to watch debris :)
What the heck, just now I was able to watch the 164MB lo-res video of debris :\
Just so I know.
Just so I know.
SUPER is a great frontend, I just wish they could have an easier navigated homepage :)
ok, here is another solution that almost doesn't suck: use demoscene.tv video on demand or download the nsv-files. at least the "hq"-ones are nicer than youtube but not of amazing quality. :)
For those situations where I can't play a video, I use AutoGK and transcode it to a less intensive format. Whether you are willing to invest that effort is another matter entirely...
Hm, I wonder what technique they used to encode the video in the early Command & Conquer games? Some of it is pre rendered CG-stuff but some include live actors. Even though the colors look real fake it's clearly real humans acting :) According to wikipedia you could play the first C&C with as little as 60 Mhz pentium under Windows (486 DX2 66 Mhz under DOS). There are a missing line every other row in the picture but that just look cool and techy.
I can confirm the C&C videos running perfectly on a 486 DX2 66 Mhz under DOS with a 2x CD-ROM drive :)
