Emulators of 32bit machines

category: general [glöplog]

Hey!

I 've never watched demos from specific machines, that's why either I had problems with an emulator, and then forgot it or because I didn't found any emulators for specific systems (not that I searched that much)
The ones are Machintosh, Archimides and Atari Falcon
Ok,. you might tell me the Machintosh is too powerfull to be emulated, but anyways there are already people trying to emulate DreamCast or Playstation2, and PCs have gone to 3Mhz now. But perhaps some machnitosh demos don't need the later machines but older hardware. There must be a mac emulator on PC, no matter if it's not working properly, eh?

But Falcon and Archimedes? I think they had a 680x0 processor or something similar in processor power. Tell me if there are some emulators on PC emulating these computers, because I really want to watch some demos in these machines too and I don't think I will find anyone owning them now here in Greece. If there is WinUAE then there must be also something for these two machines too..

Tell me names of emulator and links if you can. Please..

Erh, 90% of all Macintosh Demos (approx. 5) are Ports from PC Versions. So...

there is aranym for emulating falcon but it doesn't emulate dsp or sound at all i think.

aranym is not a falcon emulator, it's a replacement OS that currently still emulates some pieces of the falcon hardware. as a result it won't run too many falcon demos, the only two i can think of are "gem demo" and "fungle beats".

there's another falcon emu project called TOS404, but afaik there's never been a working release.

your best bet to see some falcon demos on pc/mac/whatever are probably the avi's.

Optimus, for mac there are several good emulators. All for Motorola 68x00 systems, no one for PPC emulation in PC yet. Basilisk II is good and free, but it is slow. Fusion 3 was a comercial product, but now it is free, much faster than Basilisk. Executor is so good, but it is not a complete emulation, it just runs some programs in a OS replacement (but may be the best for transfering files from Mac CDs to PC). Softmac looks as a very good one, but it is not freeware... anyway I think there are demos of it.
About the Mac emulation, in any case, you need a real Mac to get a bios copy into a file and use it in your emulator... The Mac's rom are not provided with the emulators. And else, you need an OS. As I tryed, Fusion 2 worked very good with Mac OS 8.1 a 1 Mb Rom file from a Macintosh Quadra, (also Mac OS 8 and 7.5). But, as I know, you can't run Mac OS 8.5 or higher (Mac OS X for example) because these needs PPC. About speed, Fusion 2 runned Wolfestein 3D at a full frame rate (enough fps to be completely fluid for me) in a PII 233. So, the new version, Fusion 3, with a faster machine should fly... I think it could emulate about a 100 to 150 mhz Mac machine in a 2 Ghz pentium IV (or even more).
There are other emulators as vMac... and it is freeware, portable, and all... but it is VERY slow... maybe because it uses the UAE 68k emulator engine... Portability and speed are not very good friends XD.

Thank you all!

I downloaded some of the emulators yesterday, but still I will have to search for roms and find out how to work out something, as always (grrr),. but it's a good start anyways to have these emulators in my HD and try out something occationally..
