Will ASD: LifeForce reach the all-time top?

category: general [glöplog]
But the popular demo is popular :)

Are these numbers real or are you kidding? I mean, that's 1000 downloads a day! I cannot believe it, even for the best demo ever. I mean, 1000 a day! I downloaded each of those demos once in my life, twice in the best case. I could imagine each scener downloading each demo ... 4 times? That would mean 600000/4 = 150 000 sceners in the world :) Does this mean there is someone out of the scene watching at us? 150 000 people? Downloading each demo 5 times???

I'm was really unexpected to me, a good surprise.

i think the most extreme case we ever had was kkrieger, with >1 million downloads within the first one and a half weeks (IIRC).

don't know about debris because the source most people got it from seems to have been trackmania.org - i don't know who the webmaster is, but i'd really like to have some numbers :)

iq: And they say the scene is dead ;)

iq: Not just sceners are watching demos. There are also ex-sceners, friends & family of sceners, people who accidently bumped into a demo, people who know about the scene but do not actively participate in it, etc.

Also, most people have 24/7 broadband now and therefore no reason to maintain a personal demo archive anymore, so I wouldn't be surprised if some people download the same demos dozens of times.

I think the many downloads are caused by Optimus trying to download stuff from some crappy internet cafes.

Having only briefly scanned this entire thread, I ask the question that is on everybody's lips:

How is "all-time top" calculated?

In the top of the charts we have The Popular demo:

Thumbs up: 410
Piggies: 57
Thumbs down: 21
Popularity: 100 %
Average rating: 0.80
CDCs: 1
scene.org awards: 4 (1 win, 3 nominations)

In 10th place we have Starstruck:

Thumbs up: 320
Piggies: 21
Thumbs down: 0
Popularity: 17 %
Average rating: 0.94
CDCs: 8
scene.org awards: 5 (2 wins, 3 nominations)

Somewhere in the middle we have fr-08: .the .product:

Thumbs up: 340
Piggies: 69
Thumbs down: 29
Popularity: 92 %
Average rating: 0.71
CDCs: 1
scene.org awards: 0

And outside top 10 we have an amazing demo like Lifeforce:

Thumbs up: 396
Piggies: 24
Thumbs down: 11
Popularity: 14 %
Average rating: 0.89
CDCs: 26
scene.org awards: 0

I suppose "popularity" plays a big role here, but in general I have a hard time seeing a pattern - apart from me wondering how Lifeforce only has a 14% popularity rating, I wonder if "all-time top" is mostly based on downloads and page views, and not so much on thumbs up, CDCs, scene.org awards, etc.?

ASD: LifeForce is a must be... its a cool demo with a lot of fantastic scenes and fantasy touch. even that it has, how much people said, no story... i like it very much and it should set a point in the demoscene, that it is possible today to create demos which will be in our mind for a while !

so keep up that good work ASD... :)

nutterboy: yeah, afaik the popularity is purely based on pageviews. If you'd make a script that refreshed the asd:liforce product page every other second, it would raise in the list.

okkie: i guess/hope that hits are taken into accounts only if they come from different IP during a certain period of time.

if well computed, popularity based on hits is the way to do an all-time top, because it's not about the votes of pouet users (which aren't always sceners), it's about everyone on the internet wanting to see those demos. It's an all-time top of popular demos. It's the democracy vs jury issue again :)

The Scene.org Awards came into existence years before this thing was released. Enough glue for you.

...and more more crack for me either, that's supposed to be after, not before :)

Heh :D

Well, popularity based on hits and downloads is a bad idea, IMHO.
Too easy to cheat.
The perfect formula would be a calculation that included all criteria I stated before, I think. With very small emphasis on hits and downloads, because they can be faked quite easy.
weeee, it's "cocoon should've won at evoke" all over again!

seriously, i don't doubt that for everyone here, there's a set of criteria and corresponding weights that will make the pouet alltime top10 match their personal top10. and if you used that, you'd be happy and everyone else would still go on whining.

mind, i'm not against changing the ranking formula to something new, but there's something seriously wrong with the idea that it's possible to get the rankings "right".

I think it's very safe to assume that the people in the top10 are not in there because they did some spamhitting. Besides, everything you suggested can be just as prone to be tinkered with. It's why you simply shouldn't give a rat's ass about such nonsensical things.

Have you noticed that the Top-10 is made of demos mostly released at Breakpoint ?

Assembly provides us with great productions (even better than a lot of BP ones) and they hardly gain fame. Why?

because of the german conspiracy of course :)

The all-time top should just be filled with those demos Stil has commented "BEST DEMO EVER" on and/or is thumbed up by BOTH plek AND stefan.

EVEN WORSE!

Looks at this list: http://www.pouet.net/prodlist.php?order=avg - demos ordered by voting. None of the current top10 demos is even a contender! Its all fake and cheating!

My thought is that ASD is the Radiohead of the scene. Now think what it means.

They are a hugely overrated, art elitist wannabe shit band?

Now come on oxb! That's just mean!

What makes them elitist?

hahaha okkie, damn you !

No, I won't dive into this crappy debate. Your taste, theirs, mine. Whatever. All of this can evolve. Some of their songs gave me shivers and parts of their work (and Nigel Godrich production) probably brought me inspiration over the year, along with many other things though...

However, my point was about the US market. They never gained the US market except for "Creep". And it became worse over the years because of their "art elitist wannabee shit" (your words). Kid A/Amnesiac/Hail to The Thief...

All great albums that have survived to the time and recognized in term of music creativity, but with relatively half-hearted sales.

So, Top 10 is about sales only. Now, go find what is our Britney Spears. :p
