Psy Trance, Goa Trance. I don't get it.

preacher, of course i don't second you on your drum'n'bass attitude, but what you say about repetitive music is exactly how i feel about it. especially minimal/dubtechno has this inner beauty which you can just watch growing.

here's an excellent website with free dubtechno/minimal mixes composed from netlabel releases: http://www.mixotic.net/. i love that stuff.

you _can_ tell a dnb demo soundtrack from a dnb track by any other musician...

length might be a cue here - demo tracks are usually under 4 minutes, while "professional" tracks are usually over 6 because of the mixability.
another thing is that demotracks usually need to have a certain structure because of the visuals.

I would like to add that the "give" part in my previous post refers to some sort of insight or sense of beauty, not to the quality of music per se. There is drum'n'bass I like (mostly demoscene tracks), but none of them are music I would actually choose to listen except as soundtracks in demos.

Need to check out that link..

preacher, i guess that explains why i find all drum-n-bass-esque soundtracks in traction demos kinda "weird" - they're more demoscene than dancefloor dnb. :) which doesnt make them any worse though - in a demoscene context.

and yeah DEFINETELY check out that link. they have like 70 mixes up there, and i listened to only a few... my favorites are 042 and 043.

Hallucinogen - LSD is teh psy trance LP of all times, down here on earth to the infinite skies. We might stick it to a rocket and send it to outer space to gain alien's friendship :p
Infected Mushroom are also killers. We had some great moments with those at gigs.

It was my daily dose both with rock music in the mid-90's but it became way too much stereotyped so I got bored.

I have always thought that this music was build with some great albums ( Hallucinogen, Astral Projection, the french of Total Eclipse with their grandiose "Violent Relaxation" and Infected Mushroom later on...) and all the rest was just more or less bad cloning.

Everything was said with those albums and I still love to put LSD or Violent Relaxation loud in my headphones during train trips :)

hm. I forgot to tell that I more recently bought the Sphongle (Hallucinogen's new project) albums and "Tales of the inexpressible" is definitely a great album to listen when moving from a place to an other. It's an amazing musical trip, like a film or something with many details and variations!

Some goa is incredible. It gets my pulse racing, it makes my head spin and it's so fast and complicated, and sounds like an orchestra.

Other stuff is really basic, repetetive and empty, especially the more ambient stuff. I don't know how or why it gets labelled as Goa/Psy because it forms a very bad impression.

I agree with Oxb about Hallucinogen's LSD. That's the album of the ages! Lone Deranger is just as good in my opinion. I also love Misted Muppet, Space Cat and Filteria. Those are the ones who create the most exciting music in my opinion.

I find it really hard to listen to other music because it sounds so empty and basic to me now.
psytrance is prolly like most other genres, there is alot of shit but a few really good artists.

i listen to psytrance quite often nowadays, just as preacher i enjoy it even when im sober ;)

i would love to see more psytrance demos, in the line of the music of Hux Flux and Koxbox maybe or some of that crazy finnish stuff (scandinavian style psytrance basiclly).

maybe i should get my thumb out of my ass and do something about it myself, but it's fucking hard finding people on the scene producing quality psytrance tracks.

ShanetheBee: Wade also likes Filteria!
rc55: that's why the Chemical Brothers came to earth, to make you reach the trance state with beloved various rock, pop, dance, industrial(!) and bass sounds!!

their crescendos and explosions are orgasmic \o/

If you want crescendos and explosions, try Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Not exactly trance or goa though :)

Psytrance music is for ppl on drugs or ppl who never made music and never tried to play any instruments themselves. Only then can you like it.
While chiptunes are the pinnacle of the evolution of Western music.

Stephane Holweck, Total Eclipse and Juno Reactor founder and composer, is a very talented bassist who played in various jazz bands. He later played with Youth et Big Paul (from Killing Joke, one of the most respected post punk band, who influenced many many many rock/metal groups!)... He is also good (with a professional meaning) at guitar and synths, and of course in music producing.

Simon Posford (Hallucinogen) is very good at synth and he also plays classical guitar (and well, he's an amazing composer who has strong abilities not only with programming but also with music theory and especially rythms, scales, and such... LSD was great for that, but latest Sphongle project shows some obvious talents in this domain with a lot of inspiration)

I think that most composers reaching this high level are first very good musicians with extended knowledges and practices whatever the style they chose to create !

And year, Chemical Brothers is the new psy madness! Their live shows are crazy.

ok, i listen to psy music quite often and still i think the odds are really quite bad that you get to hear good music when you go to a random psytrance party. there are 2 main reasons for that imho:

1. the psy producers are scattered into lots and lots of subgenres and a lot of them really are narrowminded and produce albums that sound like one track with 9 remixes.
2. the labels produce to much. much too much. sometimes it feels like there is no quality control at all. i bet there are more than 500 cds that came out this year until now on psy-labels and i checked the sample mp3-clips of maybe 50-100 of them. to other people i wound not reccomend more than a handful of releases. yes its that bad, you have to dig really deep.

on the other hand there are some releases that are so good, so inspired and i would even say timeless that i guess i will listen to them as a grandpa and i keep on digging for some time to come. for parties its really difficult to figure out where to go, but i definately reccomend trying an outdoor party where you can leave the dancefloor anytime and still have a good time. different daytimes usually offer different music, so if you dont like the music at night wait for the morning or forenoon. also a dj usually a dj tries to have some sort of story in his set if something sounds boring come back an hour later and be sure that it is much more intense.
