I've seen at least these two in a similar style. Is there a tool for making them, or were the made by hand?

For my own sanity... This is how I meant the cube to look.

You can make the steps in a drawing tool and save the gifs then convert them into a single animated gif.

Or even easier, some tools do it from scratch. I think Ulead Gifanimator used to make stuff like that. You can also do it online on many websites that create customized animated gifs with various inputs (colors, fonts, etc...)

Doing those takes like 2 minutes in PhotoShop and ImageReady.
Put the text on a layer, create a grouped layer with the mask/pattern/whaterver, duplicate the frame, move the text, tween the animation. Done.
