15 megs for a demo
category: general [glöplog]
I Checked the evoke web site this morning dans i discorved that the size limit is 15 meg. Considering that the size limit was 16 meg for Wired 1998, that an HRDI skybox is about 2 meg, that 256*256 diffuse texture only is not really state of the art, that the last (very good )FLT demo fits in 25 megs, i wonder if it could be possible to push that limit a bit ( at least 25 megs). I know pepole complainaed about the 64 meg BP 07 limit, but come on we should be able to find something clever beteewen 15 and 64.

"demo competitions are not about size optimising"
"size optimising is the only interesting thing in democoding these days"
"64mb isnt actually very much and one could comfortably use 128mb or more for a demo"
"15mb is actually quite a lot considering all we need is a tune and 200k of code"
"if a 4k needs a ps3.0 card to run, a 64mb demo will clearly use 200gb of memory and need a geforce27 running ps9.0 to work properly, and im not due to upgrade my machine to that until november"
"the artists should be able to express themselves too"

15mb sounds low these days.. we have the power (and the need with high res screens) to put a lot more higher quality content on the screen, more space is needed for it. Besides, it's not like there are a lot of people with dial up internet still, downloading 50mb isn't an issue. Perhaps hosting it is, but surely that could be sorted out?
I'll start to worry about the lack of size coding in the demo compo when a good quality video is smaller than the exe.
If you can't cope with the rules imposed at a party release your demo someplace else.
Clever boy that Nytrik is, he has probably taken this up with the *Evoke organizers* via mail, phone or irc, and then posted this comment here just to start a trollfight in a forum totally unrelated to Evoke.
smash: you forgot the famous "you don't understand the art of democoding" galore
The destroyer seems to be a good packer. But the loader is certainly slow...
ok forget it ...
slummy : can you please tell where i should speak about this ...?

Yeah, i hate these dumbasses what thinks like that:
"Oh yeah, who cares it's 50mb?"
I care, because 25k modem users (funny but true) aren't have time to download huge demo.

Oh, and my machine has been updated, so come on with all your oversized and pixel-shadered stuffs, I fear nothing. Risk everything! ^-^
