That is a crappy movie.
Did you read the real biography of that guy? He quit his md education because he was afraid he would not earn enough. So he decided to persue a job where he would get lots of money in a purely selfish way. All the "hardships" he had to endure were purely self inflicted. He actually earned enough money during his to be able to sustain a life, but decided to live on the street for weird reasons including greed.
