I don't know what you mean by "authentic"...
For me definitively the best chip tune I ever heard was the UMD8730 intro tune by TAO.

YM-2149 used to the best :)

Ym-2149: xenon & beyond the ice palace
Authentic? Like what? Like ruling out mod because the instruments aren't generated on-the-fly? That would mean every softsynth tune is chip, then? :p
Easy definition: Does it sound like a chip tune? It IS a chip tune :)

Zapped-out by 4mat, Russian theme by TDK (Melon's Tetris intro, of course), heaps of Future Composer tunes (Astaroth, Paradox, Thalion). And that version of Warhawk from the Crystal cracktro :)

...Now I'll hit submit and remember at least 15 more.

Allanon: The one from Intro Fuglebad by Ted's Farm of Movement? I think that's just the original SID, or at least a perfect conversion..?

Impossible to pick, so many songs in so many formats, but from the top of my head the list goes like this.

SIDs:
1. Junk Zakk by Drax/Vibrants
2. Syncopated by Laxity/Vibrants
3. Robocop 3 by Jeroen Tel/Maniacs of Noise
4. Monty on the Run by Rob Hubbard
5. Commando by Rob Hubbard

MODs:
1. bob le cintre by Doh/Cryptoburners
2. terraforming by Pink/Abyss
3. hero's quest ingame by 4-mat
4. tak by andy/banal projects
5. en l'air by diesel&maf

Here are the files in a ZIP:

spr0ck: I'm pretty sure it isn't the SID, rather sounds like a FC. Yep, it was used in a Intro Fuglebad =) (Superfrog maybe?) I'll try to find it.

Some of these rules, hero quest music is my favorite and I didn't knew some cool music from C64 games, cause I never had a C64 to play them!
