Hey there, Jason Scott, co-organizer of Blockparty here.

I just got back into town (drove 675 miles from Cleveland to home last night). Radman had to fly directly from Cleveland to LA for a two-day trip. We'll be getting all the releases and all the results in the pretty form and all that very shortly.

I'll be mostly incommunicado for the next 2 days, but I just wanted to thank everyone for supporting blockparty this year, especially those who made the long journey to be there in person...!

I wrote this email at 4:00 Friday night/morning to thom. It pretty much captures the spirit of the party:

The http://www.demoparty.us site has now been updated with an archived 2007 party site, and a wrap-up page which includes photos, writeups and artifacts. The releases will also be making an appearance today.

one important question: was this party better than pilgrimage?

unsee, judging from the comments I don't think there is any contest :)

I guess he raised the question to get an answer in cold print because pilgrimage's main organizer behaved like he was the founder of the demoscene in person. But I might be wrong ...

I was at pil04 and 05, and blockparty.

For pil04, RadMan was a co-orga and I think Jason Scott was also. We (ND) made an awesome invite. Legalize's fevered ego and the intense mormonosity of SLC dragged the party down. In Legalize's opening speech for pil04 he ranted about the "eurotrash and canadian pussies." Throughout pil04 and 05 he acted like the party, the demos, and the panamerican scene were his personal property. There was a COP patrolling the halls to make sure people didn't carry booze from room to room.
Despite this, pil04 was pretty rad. A long lineup of good speakers (including Thom Forsythe from RAD game tools) and loads of great compo entries.

Pil05 was pil04 without the good parts. It felt like being at a spoiled kid's birthday party. No internet despite being sponsored by the local ISP, no alchohol allowed on site, the place had to close at 11pm and be locked up. Hotels were a $5 cab ride away from the party place. The hotel was poorly run, the manager was at home asleep when we showed up. Less entries than previous, but still some neat stuff.

Pil06 was legalize allowing you to go to a gaming lan party with him and watch him watch stargate and try to pick up some chick. He blew the (donated!) projector money on a newspaper ad. Almost no advance notice of the party info. As far as I know, there were no entries at all.

Blockparty was practically fucking perfect. How can I list it all?
I'll try:
Orgas partnered with Notacon, a hacker/art con that's been going for years.
Wireless Internet everywhere. Tables. Power. (although Trixter did throw a breaker during his 8088 corruption demo, lol)
Booze allowed at party place, which was in the hotel. Shops and food within walking distance.
Big pro screen and sound for compos.
2 seminar rooms, 1 hacker stuff and the other demo stuff, and another room for lock picking, electric trains and other hackery things. LOADS of speakers. (Necros, Pheonix, Trixter, Polaris&S_Tec, RadMan and others)
24 hour usable mini-conference room for democoders working until the deadline (on 2nd floor, across from the buffet room the hackers had and next to the hacker radio station).
A restaurant at the bar where I could eat (non-trivial, I've got celiac sprue)
Jason Scott, circus ringmaster, in a top hat and tails, explaining the 'point' of the compos to the crowd, handling heckling with bombast.
An awesome invite (made by us again ^_^) which aired at Numerica.
The only gamers at the party were TFinn playing Alleycat on the 8088.
Oh, and if you walked out of the front door of the hotel and looked across lake Erie, you could see just barely see Canada.

Put simply, it was like having a pretty, athletic, smart, bisexual punk rock girlfriend after being stuck for several years in small-town texas with an ugly, manipulative jesus freak.

Sounds cool. I really hope they'll become North Americas longest running demo party in 2010. ;)

athletic -> bony, eats carrots and nuts

punk rock -> dresses in that very particular way that says "it doesn't matter how you dress". listens to whiny commercial crap all day and tries to learn how to play the guitar, but zero determination.
