Will farbrausch's fr-041: debris reach the all-time top?

category: general [glöplog]
"Overrated" means nothing anyway. If a lot of people like it but YOU don't, it's your problem :)

This popularity/vote thing means ONE thing: it's popular = a lot of people like it.
It does not mean in any way that a given prod is the best demo ever or anything.

Same goes for commercial music charts, a top 10 has never meant that those were the 10 best tracks available at the moment, they are simply the most popular.

Charts and popularity never meant quality (I'm not refering to FR-041, which I loved and found brilliant by the way), they only refer to the average people's taste.

The day people understand that, they will stop whining about things being overrated on Pouet :)

Nothing personal Noouch btw ;)

Well it's just that although it is a truly awesome demo, and it deserves a place at the top for sure, but all the people throwing their hands in the air going HOLY CRAP REVOLUTIONARY LOLOL are just getting on my nerves...

Ahh no! why did "Live Evil" have to go? I think its time for "tube" to step down..

i dont think so. there´s nothing super-special in the demo, only the compression is impressive. all other things is usual stuff that can be seen in many other demos (of course without the nice "camera"-views and the good design). another thing for me is that there are not much own, new ideas in the demo, when i watched it, i always had that "where have i seen this before?"-feeling.

Meh. It has balls, it has proper direction, animation and models and you'd hate yourself to actually recognize that. More importantly, it has been CARED FOR, not just put in the microwave 5 minutes before the compo. It's the most important demo farbrausch ever made. For once I felt every participant finally came with its heart and skills, and it all came together very nicely.

This feels like a good place to ventilate my opinion about this particular demo :)

There is no denying that it portrays quality, hence my thumb up, in every sense of the word (allthough the filesize does not surprise me the least bit considering that it's made with their nice tools); the colors, scenery and direction *did* bore me though, I had seen the gist of it in the first minute or two.

This is highly subjective, I know; at the office 1 artist agreed with me and 2 or 3 coders were mildly infuriated by my remark :)

I still prefer that popular demo or KB's Candytron, makes me feel warm inside.

FR did a great job. Period.

Now, another true fact is that FR041 has completley overshadowed the poor quality of compos over there at BP07. This ain't a bad thing after all, and this has made the WOW fx even more powerful.

Perhaps FR041 is a pop thing, something popular. Just consider this as very good pop! It makes people happy, that's cool.

Personally, despite not being involved into demo creation, it just pushes me up, a kind of sane competitive spirit like ppl like i.e Paniq gave me through his amazing creativiy back in 2003-2004.

Congrats FR, Congrats Fiver2 and thank you !

debris has reached 4th place now.
I like debris... I like it very much indeed, but sincerely, I fail to see how it's better than "Live Evil", or "Planet Risk" (talking about all time top 10 pouet demos here).

I'm sorry but I even fail to see how this one has a bigger "wow-factor" (of course it's technically better) than demos like Panic, Second Reality, Crystal Dream II, or Stars (back on their day), if we are sticking to PC scene.

Of course, it's an unfair comparison, and I'm maybe just too... "oldschool" (?) for it, but my top 10 "all time" demos seem to be measured quite differently to what most of you do. Times change, technology changes, and side-by-side comparisons for an "all-time" top 10 are basically not fair anymore... so I think sticking to the "wow-factor-when-I-saw-it-the-first-time" is a better choice for a personal top-10 selection.

Not implying here that anything should be changed in the charts, I know there's not a perfect solution to this, but hey, here's a thread speaking about it, let me give my 0.02 euro cents :-)

still on fourth. this can take a while, okay.
I actually didn't enjoy it that much. Yeah, hate me ;). I totally respect FR because of the technical achievements, and I can tell it's more than excellently put together, like objectively, but it just doesn't speak to me. It's not a happy demo I guess. Sure, stuff gets destroyed, but in a sort of indifferent way. Like "building falls apart.. upwards.. whatever". If you know what I mean.

That makes me think... here it goes a little idea for pouet.net:

* What about having a my_charts.php where you can fill your top10 prods. Right now we have the popularity charts, but maybe if you do a new kind of charts mixing all the top10 charts of each user the results would be quite different? Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think that fr025 is in the top of everyones top10 private charts, if you know what I mean...

Thoughts?

I don't get how the ravebusters thing can be #10 on top-of-the-month with 1% popularity. The popularity scale is not very intuitive, so it's a little hard to "trust" it. Mixing everyones personal top 10s (or top 5s) would be easier to understand at least.

Doom: Everything in the top of the month except the top5 has 1% popularity, and everything in the top5 except debris has either 2% or 3% popularity...

and debris only got such high popularity because some guys (not us!!!) posted links to pouet on somethingawful and a few other forums.

Question is...

fr-08 had farbomat
fr-019 had rauschomat
fr-025 had cargo cult (and funky bitch, kinda)

... so when's the minus for debris coming? :D
