This is like the people who come in and remove 'coffee and tea' from workplaces as a 'cost saving measure' - and then leave people to pay for their own coffee and tea. Worker's morale goes down, productivity drops, people look for other jobs with employers who actually think of them as people with some worth - at MINIMUM, the worth of having coffee and tea, a very MINOR expense, paid for. Sure, the business saved 150 bucks over the course of the year; the drop in morale, productivity and loss of employees with clue is a hit far greater than 150 bucks. Probably to the tune of 50 times 150 bucks.
So - yes, nuke the beer garden. Certainly no one wants to have a nice place to sit and enjoy a beer or two with friends they haven't seen for months or even a full year during a 4 day party.

You ever visit Mekka/Symposium or Wired? I remember MS as one of the greatest parties ever and yes, they 'only' had one bigscreen (with audio), no beer garden at all (people just bring some tents and blankets), no fancy mirror balls and so on. And guess what? We survived!

Yes, stop exploding. What _I_ meant was stuff like the "lights & effects" bit. Apparently smoke machines and spotlights alone cost a couple thousand euros. Makes you think. ;) And I honestly can't even remember where that third bigscreen was..?
As for the "beer garden" expense, I'm guessing that refers to fence rental, and the cost of repairing the grassy area around the hall, so "beer garden" isn't really optional if that's the case.

Doom: One Bigscreen was near the infodesk ("second stage"), one was in the beer garden tent. Since there are enough people with screens and projectors, there should only be a reasonable cost for the main screen.
fzool mekka was sure a cool party but i do prefer sitting in a warm dry tent around a table sipping beer and chatting with friends rathern than outside in the rain around a fire on a shopping cart nicked from the local supermarket.

The third screen+PA has been used in the seminar area for the seminars. Yes, actually that counts. :)

gasman: Excellent point, thank you. Yes, really, most of those "couldn't you save costs here and there" kind of hints are meant to be constructive, but really are just a waste of time. I know our budget plans quite well, and for everything that has been suggested in regards of savings, there is a very good reason for it to be essential to Breakpoint - the shuttle bus is one example.
But just to give another example: We can't save on "lights and effects" - the whole PA and all lights and effects are rented for a flat-fee anyway from our long-time partner, we simply get everything we want. The video equipment comes from an external partner, but there just is no way to save on this. Yes, we could save some money by dropping all the video converter stuff needed for C64 and Amiga. But this would be INSANE.
There is nothing in the Breakpoint budget plan that we could remove or reduce to save money, without killing features that are essential to one part of the scene or another.
So, just trust me: Our budget already is as well-thought about as possible, and the result of 5 years of experience. Wherever possible, we chose the cheapest suppliers and try to get things for free etc. There is no way to significantly lower costs without making the party suck compared to previous Breakpoints. We don't want to step back, we don't want to have invested all our energy with people afterwards telling us "nice party, but Breakpoint 2006 was much better".
Anyway, there also is absolutely no need to run amok, it's just that it would be nice to get a few more sponsors. And behind the scenes, quite a lot of sceners have now started asking around and are trying to draw attention to Breakpoint sponsoring. Thanks for all that have helped in this - I'm pretty confident that out of some of the contacts made a few more sponsor contracts will turn out.
We'll also use the interesting feedback about possible changes to the ticket system and make something out of that.

besides, if i remember it correctly, the third (seminar) and probably the second projector too (not sure about that one) were brought by organizers last year, so no, we didn't have to pay for them.

Well, Dr Doom, I'm looking forward to a big Iris organized Amiga-only party in Denmark, which would be a shorter trip for me. And there has to be something comparable one day to all those massive c64 only parties...
