A lot of the very old mods i listen to, all seem to have the same sample sets, which gives them that old school feel.

but where did they come from? were they a set that was built in or supplied with the amgia? or did people just copy them from each others songs?

I have often wondered about this ^_^

At the beggining of the Amiga, Everybody (in my area) had the same sample floppy disk "ST-01", "ST-02", "ST-03" and "ST-04" and the musics were spreads not as" module" but as "song"..

So when you received a new song.. you had to insert the song disk in the amiga, select "LOAD" on your Soundtracker program, then the program ask you to put each disks "ST-xx" to retrieve each samples..

I think it was to reduce size of files.. (song files were very small) .. but songs had to use the same samples.

you're right, and it was a very effective way to reduce the size, since of course most of the data in a module file is sample data.

also, the first version of soundtracker (or, rather, "the ultimate soundtracker") was commercial, and i reckon the st-01 disk was included in the original package with the program itself.
