Let me just add my humble point in this thread, focusing to the scene situation in the country where I live (italy):
Of course there are people aware of the demoscene, and there are at least 20 people calling themselves "demosceners" or pretending to be part of such a movement. However, every scene activity in this country fades away if compared to what actually happens in scene-civilized countries (talking about germany, france, sweden and all those places you know...).
So, I give you some reasons which i came up to while wondering about this:
- stupid country morphology: living in a long and narrow country, it's very difficult to gather together. People Living in the south have to travel more than 1000 km just to get to Buezli (the closer demoparty available).
- poor education: as a matter of fact, italian people suck at informatics. Not to talk about english speech :)
- lousy economics: we are an averagely poor country, people can't afford travelling so much, and if they have some spare time, they most likely do something they can get profit from.

I could throw a couple of reasons more, but the general point is: if you can't gather demosceners together, both for demomaking and for partying, your demoscene is born dead.

from what i seen from the internet italy is not that bad when it comes to informatic education.
but then again lots countries with good such education similarly dont have a big active scene so it cant really be used as an argument.

i reckon its groups existing that pushes the scene to get more famous in its own country.

20 musicians, 5 coders and 5 graphicians isnt an active scene. 3 groups with them is. if they are dumb enough to bother releasing anything on the sole demoparty beeing organized every year atleast.

Btw,. when saying there is no scene, I don't mean that there is not even one lonely scener, but meaned countries where there are very few people, no parties, no organised groups, etc. Just to clean up things. I know there are/were sometimes sceners, groups and even demoparties in exotic places (e.g. in Asia, Africa or South America) but not something I could call a scene. But my question was about some more civilized and rich countries, which have the opportunity to form a scene and not the exotic countries..

is there a scene in heaven?
added on the 2003-02-03 20:41:43 by Optimus Optimus
Optimus, just think a little. There can't be a scene in heaven.
What do sceners do? They are drunkards, some of them use pirated software, they have nasty sexual life - or some of them keep their virginity, but that's more a fault, not a merit -, using bad words, watch pr0n, listen to illegal mp3-z, use drugs, so they face damnation. This means there is no scener in heaven. And without sceners there can be no scene...

Actually there are hundreds or thousands very talented ASCII artists without any connection to the demoscene. Most of them do know about the demoscene and ANSI art, though.

hey man, the uk does have a scene. of some kind.

the thing is that the games industry very big here, so most of the uk scene's coders and some of the artists work in the games industry as well. perhaps thats why the ukscene is quite lazy - any good scene coder can easily get a job here in the games industry, and that means a full time job coding, taking away some time or interest from scene activities in many cases. but thats often an excuse i think. =)
i think thats probably the case with the US too in many cases - big games industry or other media industries to go into professionally, so less time for the scene - or no wish to go into it in the first place.
however, i often find at work that, while hardly anyone is involved in the scene now, many of the people here have heard of it or used to be involved in it. often people say they arent interested since the scene left amiga or since the mid nineties cos the demos are less impressive now (compared to games, tech demos etc). shame really.

we import a lot of sceners. e.g. pantaloon / flt, igge/noice, boo and optic / talent, bizze/themoosebrothers, nix/tbl (dunno if hes still here), many more. mainly for the games industry.
that said, we do have few well known people in the uk, but they are mainly members of foreign groups.
the closest thing now to a well known uk scene group on pc is probably fairlight demo division actually, with 4 main members based in the uk.
as for parties, there was no uk party last year or year before. there was a party in 1998-2000, and hopefully there will be one or even two in 2003. we hope (riiiight..). also, uk sceners are fucking lazy when it comes to going to foreign parties. very few ever go abroad for a demoparty. theres a great deal of apathy.

the question "why is there no scene in england" is something ive asked myself before. its just left to the few who are really interested do their best to try and wake up the others, and hope to make them interested enough to do something.

Dunno about UK (saw the site) or Japan, but in the USA, anybody who becomes good at anything will start working for real bucks at some company that will pay him said bucks. The good sceners-to-be just get snatched away.

that's a very nice story about the big'n'evil industry eating up the wannabe-sceners. And it is a very true story more or less.
But, somebody kick me to the right path if i'm wrong, but i was thinking about how old was i when i started doing scene stuff. I think i was 14, or 15.
Many of the sceners create(d) demos while they are schoolkids, attend to universities or anything. Or was that oldskool?
Now demoscene became an adult only industry with big boys checking id-s whether you are in a legal age to create demos?
And somehow you have to become good, don't you? I think demoscene - and demo creating - was a good education, and good experience for wannabe game coders/graphicians/musicians and stuff...
That's a great excuse to say that uk, japan, and usa scene got commercialised, but it stinks to me... Where are the talented youngsters?
